Ethical Care
Unit 5 – Meeting individual care and support needs
Tremayne M. aged 54 years
Aisha H. aged 82 years
Task 1A

P1 – Explain the importance of promoting equality and diversity for individuals
with different needs
Equality in health and social care means ensuring everyone in your setting has equal
opportunities, regardless of their abilities, their background or their lifestyle. Diversity in
health and social care means appreciating the differences between people and treating
people's values, beliefs, cultures and lifestyles with respect. Discrimination in health and
social care is when a healthcare provider treats you differently and worse than someone
else for certain reasons which could be because of your sex, religion, age, belief or your
background. Anti-discrimination in health and social care means against discrimination,
to oppose or prevent discrimination, unfair treatment of an individual due to their sex,
age, race, etc.
In a health and social care sector it is always important that equality, diversity and anti-
discrimination are promoted, any job role within this sector should promote these three
elements, including health and social care practitioners because they are directly in
contact with the service users, which means that health and social care practitioners
come across various individuals that are different from one another. Health and social
care practitioners promoting these three elements will show that no one is discriminated
against regardless of their background, everyone gets treated fairly and equally. No one
at any circumstance or at any time with the health and social care practitioners will feel
or be disadvantaged and judged on their personal lifestyle choices or who they are as
an individual. This is to always maintain ethicality and an anti-discriminatory policy
within the health and social care sector.
Health and social care practitioners promote equality, diversity and anti-discrimination
when caring for Tremayne and Aisha.
For Tremayne they promote those three elements by allowing him to be admitted to a
community hospital even though he has autism, this shows regardless of what disability
he may have, he still has a right to care to treat his left leg that is broken in three places.
Treymane has a team of carers who support him otherwise known as a multi-
disciplinary team, one of the workers in his multi-disciplinary team would be a social
worker because Tremayne or Aisha in this case have a limited mental capacity so a
social worker will be able to make decisions for them, however they do not live with

,them which shows that he has his right to privacy and independence, this shows that
the team of carers have dignity for him. His right to privacy is covered by the Health and
Social Care Act 2008. It also shows that the team of carers are taking into account
Tremaynes' mental capacity. There is no discrimination taking place as he was still
transferred from a larger hospital in the city to a community hospital which still carries
on his rehabilitation care. Him being transferred to a community hospital shows that the
team of carers care for him by the community hospital being local to him, which overall
makes it accessible for him.
As for Aisha, they promote those three elements by being admitted to the community
hospital even though she has pneumonia. This shows that care is being administered to
Aisha and she is not judged against due to having the infection. Aisha has vascular
dementia, which is becoming more severe, since her vascular dementia is becoming
more severe, she’ll receive an advocate, this is because vascular dementia disrupts the
brain or in other words a general term describing problems with reasoning, planning,
judgment, memory and other thought processes caused by brain damage from impaired
blood flow to her brain. Aisha lives independently which shows that the community
hospital has given her control of her privacy and Aisha is maintaining her dignity. Even
though Aisha has lost mostly everything such as her siblings, her former friends that she
no longer has contact with and she has no family left, the community hospital still gives
her, her own independence which shows tremendous amounts of dignity towards Aisha
as she is on the verge of losing completely everything due to her severe vascular
dementia and pneumonia. There is no discrimination against Aisha as she is a
practicing Buddhist which shows that her religion doesn’t differentiate or disadvantage
her in any way for the care practitioners. The care practitioners constantly need to
change Aisha due to her developing incontinence since being administered to the
community hospital, also that Aisha is a Buddhist she’ll have specific needs which the
advocate and the care practitioners will take into account, so it aligns with her religions
requirements and that is doesn’t discriminate her in anyway due to her being Buddhist.
Aisha and Tremayne are both vulnerable individuals, not maintaining anti-discriminatory
practices could result in exclusion of both due to their different needs. Exclusion can be
seen in everyday life, for example not letting Tremayne have a conversation with other
service users at the community hospital because of his random outbursts and
disruptiveness.
It is important to promote equality for both Aisha and Tremayne because it makes sure
that the services provided to them are fair and accessible. It ensures that both are
treated as equals, that both get the dignity and respect they deserve and that their
differences are celebrated.

P2 – Explain the skills and personal attributes necessary for professionals who
care for individuals with different needs

, The skills and personal attributes that are necessary for professionals who care for
Aisha and Tremayne are the following, skills first: communication skills this is because
the professional may talk with Tremayne about his treatments at the community
hospital, such as his care plans or his rehabilitation care so that he understands what is
going to happen to him and the professional will talk to the advocate for Aisha because
she can't speak for herself due to her vascular dementia. Another skill would be
teamwork, this is because the professional can't be biased towards the decision that
Tremayne or Aisha make, for example for Tremayne if he is placed at the community
hospital waiting for his appointment, it’ll be unfair for him because he is quite disruptive
and is subject to outbursts of temper which will make the service users around him
distressed but in turn will make him feel uncomfortable and awkward because of his
disruptiveness and outburst. So, the professional would need to work with Tremayne
and provide a separate appointment outside the hospital hours or even make a personal
visit to his home.
For Aisha she would need to have her religious beliefs met because she is a practicing
Buddhist, so she may have some food restrictions such as meat which is considered an
intoxicant to the body, which violates the fifth moral principle in Buddhism so the
professional will have to agree and arrange specific meals for Aisha so that her religious
standards are met. So, the professional will make sure that her religious requirements
are met and not discriminated against. Now for Personal attributes: passion as a
personal attribute this is because the professional would want to make a difference in
Tremayne’s life, especially in the health and social care sector. This is where passion
makes the real difference. The professional would want to make it as enjoyable as
possible for Tremayne when he’s at the community hospital, this is because it provides
a positive experience which then reflects on the professional due to them practically
setting up the splendid atmosphere that Tremayne is in.
As for Aisha since she is very vulnerable as an individual, the professional will make her
life as simple and hassle free as possible because the professional wouldn’t want to add
pressure on top of what Aisha is experiencing with currently, Aisha will show a lot of
respect towards the professional and Aisha as a whole will enjoy her experience at the
community hospital. The second personal attribute would be dedication because
Tremayne is a needy person, he needs a lot of care, he needs constant checkups and
looking after, so the professional would need dedication and the professional would
need to perform consistently and over and beyond for Tremayne as he does have
outbursts of temper and is disruptive. As for Aisha, she needs help with mostly
everything, Aisha simply can't do things for herself due to her vascular dementia and
pneumonia so the professional too, would need to go over and beyond as Aisha is
solely dependent on the professional. Aisha as well would need lots of taking care of the
professional would need to person consistently throughout the care for Aisha.
There are the 6C’s in health and social care which are care, competence,
communication, courage, commitment and compassion. Care means looking after and
