Care or Children’s and Young People’s Settings

LEARNING OUTCOME 11.1 Explain what is meant by Diversity, Equality and
Inclusion

Diversity can be described as accepting and respecting that each individual is unique
and recognising every individual’s differences and valuing everyone. These differences
can be race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs
or culture etc. Each person is an individual with differences known or unknown and by
respecting this everyone can feel valued for their contributions which is beneficial not
only to the individual but also to the workplace.

Equality means treating people in a way that is appropriate for their needs and means
equal rights for everyone regardless of their differences. Equality is when everyone is
treated the same and is about creating a fairer society where everyone can participate
and has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. It is also about identifying patterns of
experience based on group identity and the challenging processes that limit individual’s
potential health and life chance.

Equality is also about promotion of individual rights.

As a support worker, every individual in my service has the right to giving choice and
opportunity; respect and fairness. Treating each service user as an individual allows this
to happen.

Each unique individual has their own needs and requirements and it’s up to me as a
support worker to understand each individual characteristic and know how to inspire
them to be successful and feel equal in today’s contemporary society.

The Equality Act 2010 is designed to combat discrimination and uphold the rights of
individual. In the provision of care services, it means that you must offer the same
quality of care to all regardless of race, religion colour or other protected characteristic.

Inclusion means to be fully included, to make people feel valued and respected
irrespective of ethnicity, gender, disability, culture, age and religion. It is about giving
equal access and opportunities, breaking down barriers and getting rid of discrimination
and intolerance. In my work place, the service users are given person centred
approaches where they are at the centre of planning and their support.

Inclusion in a work environment is where everyone has an opportunity to fully participate
in all aspect that will bring positive growth in that organisation.

1.2 Describe the potential effects of Discrimination

Discrimination is the act of recognising, seeing and distinguishing differences and
choosing to show prejudice and bias. There are two types of discrimination that’s direct
and indirect discrimination. Discrimination delays development and also makes people
to lose their self-esteem.

It brings about harassment and reduces opportunities. The effect of discrimination can
be based on simple hatred of a race, gender or a certain group.

Some of the effect of discrimination can be in the form of repeated mistreatment, verbal
abuse, threats, humiliation or intimidating behaviour or conduct. Discrimination has
mental and physical health consequences on an individual such as stress, frustration
and prejudice. Discrimination can make a work place a living hell.

Some potential effects can be physically and emotionally, depression, isolation, and
loss of self-esteem.

Discrimination is being treated less favourably than someone else in the same situation
or unfair or unequal treatment of an individual due to age, disability, gender, race,
religion or beliefs. Discrimination has a negative effect on individual by damaging
person’s self-esteem.

The potential effects of Discrimination may include the following:
