• Dramatic monologue
• Ten tercet stanzas
• Half rhyme creates of claustrophobia and uncertainty. Rhymes not adding up creates suspicion

to understand the nature of the husband. Semantic field for the beach reflects cellulite with
oceans and expansion of depth and with of women. Rigid form mirrors he strict regime that has
been normalised
• Repetition of the idea of being fat and obesity enforces that its closely thought about and in
stanza seven a resentful tone is formed due to the quickening pace
• Assonance of ‘o’ sound in the 8th tercet, “Poured olive oil down my throat” creates a sense of
chocking
• Strong Sounds demonstrates force and control
• ‘Soon you’ll be forty...’. By having both dialect in italics ad his literal objectifications of the
persona highlight his mental and physical abuse of her. The ellipse, caesura, forces the reader to
pause. Physical emphasises of the split second that the persona made her decision
• Horrific semantic field though the assonance between ‘rolled’ and ‘drowned’ with its repetition
finishing with ‘dying sentence out’ forcing the reader to enforce the Reader to feel conflicted at
the end of the poem as although the persona is free it is conflicted over the means of how she
escaped and the dynamic verbs emphasises that the abuse side of femininity.
• End-stopped lines on the final line of each stanza apart from stanza six emphasises the routine
and consistency. Final line suggests a disruption to the routine of the persona
• Final two lines finish with a full stop to signify the death of the man and the relationship.
Transgression of seamlessly endless cycle. Indicates society holds higher standards for women.
• Sense of unease a rhythm has been interrupted
• Heteroglossia in the 4th and 8th and 9th stanza
