In this assignment I will be relating to a simulated work experience at gateway view nursinghome; this is a facility that caters to 12 resident with different needs. The polices and
procedure for this care home must be kept safely in the staff room and easily accessible for
regular staff training and new employees that join. The manager’s responsibility is to ensure
that the policies are regularly updated (around every 3 years) both at the nursing home and
on their nursing home website; this is necessary so that the public can have accesses to the
policies that the nursing home has but also be accessible for the regulatory body e.g. CQC
(care quality commission). All the staff including myself were trained in safeguarding, data
protection and infection control.
Hand washing techniques
When I did my training, I was first shown the different techniques used for handwashing
necessary these where commensal handwashing, social handwashing and surgical
handwashing. However i was only observed and assessed with commensal and social hand
washing as surgical handwashing is not necessary for a nursing
home. When entering the workplace before coming into contact
with the service users I would wash my hands in this is so that
outside microbes from outside don’t enter the nursing home
and affect those who are vulnerable especially following the
recent outbreak of salmonella.

PPE and its prevention in the spread of infection
PPE (personal protective equipment) is important in creating a barrier between yourself and
the site of infection vis versa. For example I helped staff change Salma’s bedding which
meant wearing full PPE as her incontinence was both on the bed and floor so I had to wear
protective boots over my shoes to prevent the microbes for getting on my shoes and
spreading further outside of the room and infecting other residents. Within PPE there are
different types these include:
Plastic apron
This helps create a barrier between you and the point of infection when cleaning and vis
versa e.g. when cleaning vomit the apron protects any vomit splashing on your body and
getting onto your staff uniform.
