Tonsils help prevent infection.
Tonsilitis –
Symptoms: Pyrexia (38/above), sore throat, problems swallowing, coughing, headache, nausea,
earache, feeling tired.
Endotoxins from tonsilitis caused by Streptococcus pyogenes are associated with the
development of rheumatic fever/glomerulonephritis.
Complications: Glandular Fever, Quinsy (Peritonsillar abscess forms behind peritonsillar tonsil,
between tonsils and wall of your throat).
Quinsy – Airway obstruction, Aspiration Pneumonia, Necrotising fasciitis (flesh eating bacteria –
occurs from infection for long periods of time), Mediastinitis (swelling/irritation of the mediastinum;
contains the heart, large blood vessels, trachea, oesophagus, thymus
gland, lymph nodes, connective tissue).
Extreme signs of swelling, typically unilateral.
