Carrie
Connection between the title and the book
The name of the main character is Carrie White. You get to know her through the storyline, but also
through newspaper articles and book extracts. Because of those scientific parts, the story seems very
real, which makes it more frightening. “From Ogilvie’s Dictionary of Psychic Phenomena: Telekinesis
is the ability to move objects or to cause changes in objects by force of the mind.” This is after Carrie
shattered the mirror on the back of a door.
Main characters
“’You can go now, Cassie,’ he said magnanimously. ‘That’s not my name!’ she screamed suddenly.
Morton recoiled,...” She seems very shy, but if someone goes too far, she snaps. The same thing
happened at prom. When that blood fell on her, she got so angry that she started killing everyone. I
don’t think this is very weird, because she has been bullied by her classmates and abused by her
mother.
Favourite character
Carrie, because she is a very complex character. She has not had the easiest life. Her mom is very
religious and she filled the house with all kinds of religious objects such as crucifixes. Whenever
Carrie would sin, she had to go into the closet and pray for forgiveness. In other words; she is being
abused. Her own mother even tried to kill her multiple times. Because of the way she was raised, her
classmates think she’s weird and she's been bullied since the first day of school.
Character development
“..., and at home she had sent Carrie to the closet for six hours.” She listens to her mother, because
she is afraid of her. At the end of the book, she finally stands up to her mother and eventually kills
her. I hoped that Carrie would still be alive at the end, because she is a misunderstood, very sweet
girl. And I think that she could’ve lived happily ever after. But unfortunately, not only her mother
dies, but also Carrie.
The most important emotional conflict
When Carrie comes home after prom, she and her mom want to kill each other. “’I came here to kill
you, Momma. And you were waiting here to kill me. Momma, I... it’s not right, Momma. It's not...’
‘Let’s pray,’ Momma said softly.” This part ends with Carrie, who is badly hurt, killing her Momma.
Even though she was the woman who raised her, she hated her for not telling her the whole truth
and punishing her for her very normal actions.
Ending
As I said earlier, I hate the ending. Carrie had a miserable life, due to her mother. So, when she killed
her mom, I was very happy. But this book is a thriller/horror book, so it was inevitable that the main
character would die eventually. And all of her classmates didn’t deserve to die either.
Setting
Time and place were not very important, I guess. Except the moment she got her first period. She
was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
