Assignment 1: Research Different Land-based OAA & complete two
Assignment title
risk assessments for two of the activities (P1, M1 & P2)

Purpose of this assignment; The aim of this unit is to enable learners to take part in selected land-based
outdoor and adventurous activities and to review performance.

Scenario; OAA plays a major role in the personal and team development of staff in most of the uniformed
public services and the Armed Forces in particular. As a young officer in the local Royal Navy Reserve you
are ordered by your commander to provide information and a presentation to future RN applicants about
the benefits and importance of OAA to local potential recruits at an open evening at your base. You must
give them an understanding of the subject and why it is so important for personal development, especially
in the public services. You will also be required to describe why health and safety is also so important in
the outdoor industry.

Task 1 (P1) Complete the attached workbook and describe four different land-based outdoor and
adventurous activities. The descriptions must include information on who provides the selected activities,
target groups and participants, locations, aims and objectives. You should also include information on the
National Governing Bodies (NGB’s) that look after each of the activities, as well as information on the
benefits of taking part in these activities to both groups and individuals. You should also state why these
OAA are also important to the UPS and why they take part.

Task 2 (M1) This is an extension of the task for P1 where you must compare and contrast the four activities
from P1 in a separate document. You could examine what benefits there might be in one but not in another.
What facilities and locations are available for each OAA and compare the facilities from each OAA.

Task 3 (P2) Complete the attached workbook where you must explain the importance of health and safety
risk assessments in OAA. You are to provide relevant real life (Lyme Bay, Glenn Ridding Beck) examples
of risk management in OAA and you must describe why health and safety is so important in OAA. You must
carry out written risk assessments for two of the different land-based outdoor and adventurous activities
you have used in P1. The assessments must cover the details of the risk, who might be affected, the
likelihood of occurrence, the severity of the risk, a risk rating, controls and contingencies. You should
include in your work the role of NGB’s in ensuring that the activities they manage are safe for those who
take part. You should also include what the role of AALA and the HSE is in relation to OAA.
