Introduction
I am working for a software development company as a junior programmer. The company is considering
switching into mobile application development sector. I have been asked to evaluate a range of mobile
apps.

Application 1 – IHANDY Torch and compass (COMPARISON ANDROID AND IOS)
THEIR STORES AND IMAGES ON DIFFERENT PLATFORMS

PLAY STORE

,Level: Distinction

IOS APP STORE

This application is a native app, which is often defined as any type of application that a user chooses to
manually install such as through Google Play platform or in the instance of IOS the APP Store. This type
of application is known for its outstanding performance, meaning that that it works very smoothly
without any Lags, allowing the user to have a reasonably good experience. On both devices, the
application seems to work flawlessly, except from minor features on the IOS which may leave the users
of Android at a disadvantage. As mentioned before, this type of application is mainly installed by the
user manually, therefore meaning that no internet access is required to use the basic application itself,
as all the application contents is stored within the phone and the use of built in function of a GPS.
Making this application available on all platforms can be classified as expensive, however the application
on IOS seems like it was more expensive due to the advancements in overall features as it offers. This is
because the application itself, is programmed in one specific language, which only works with a couple
of operating systems at once. Therefore, if it is required for an application to work on iOS10 and Android
Jelly Bean, then multiple versions must be released to get it working on different operating systems. If
an application is good, users do not tend to move on fast. This application works on both IOS and
Android.

This flashlights’ function is locale combined with being a tool. – meaning that this type of an application
is mainly used for giving people directions for their destinations. To make them accurate the application
itself uses GPS as well as internet connection to track the user ensuring that they are going the right
direction. When designing this application, the programmer knew that the user will most likely be
holding the phone in their hand, therefore everything within the applications on both platforms, layout
wise is identical and it is well placed easily accessible, not requiring the user to make any un-natural/
discomforting moves. The user requirements of this application include accessibility and to be easy in
use. I believe that this application is fulfilling user requirements through taking up entirety of space of
the screen, this is because it wants to occupy full user attention, it is made this way to ensure that the
user understands exactly what they are doing. Interaction with this application is preformed via
touchscreen, the user can use it to navigate around a complex looking menu with simple buttons
allowing the user to familiarise themselves with the application because everything that the user does
can be revoked instantly with the same button.

This application uses a few device built-in functions also known as current technologies on both
platforms meaning IOS and ANDROID. This means that the programmer has considered what type of
application is it, and its purpose. Based on that the programmer has chosen what hardware components
were going to be used within the application. Meaning that within this application, the developer
understood the importance of light and Magnetometer and made those two features vital within the
functionality on both devices. However, on IOS the developer has made use of another feature called
GPS (Global Positioning System) used for establishing users’ location. This is however used locally
meaning that their current location is not being stored anywhere, in compliance with the GDPR.

Feature Function

Touch Screen Within a device an implementation of a
touchscreen meant an alternative to a
keyboard to controls, used by every
application and almost necessary on most of
devices unless another form of input is
provided as well as well as a form of output
of the image to the screen.

Light The implementation of this feature makes it
capable for people to use it as a flash, or
torch in a darkness. Light also tends to be
used within phones as a form of locating
them.
Magnetometer The implementation of magnetometer
means that a phone can determine the
direction a phone being faced regarding
magnetic north. This feature is mainly used
by applications such as navigation or a
compass.
