DD210 - TMA 05 - Excerpt II - How to defeat a troll

Part 1 - Summary - Word limit: 500

The excerpt intended to help to cope with trolls online. It suggests that trolls come in all forms
as they are hidden behind the anonymity of the internet. They take advantage of the freedom of
speech to insult and abuse people as a way to release their lack of self-esteem. Trolls don’t
belong to a specific layer of our society, instead, they come from all kind of substrates. The
ideas presented are helpful because sometimes these ofenses can end on very heavy abuses. The
article teaches us how to cope with these situations online through a list of advice. The guide’s a
self-help list that show us that are the trolls and not us the ones that have some kind of
problems. Trolls are people that use several strategies to bullying. To help yourself to deal with
trolls the excerpt propose 10 interesting ideas (tips) to follow to overpass those kind of
situations.
The first tip is asking ourselves, are we dealing with a bot or a person, which kind of person is?,
old, young? is he focused on something that we’ve said online?. There are some clues on their
profiles that could help us to identify them better. Another good advice is that it doesn’t matter
how much you would like to argue against the troll, never put yourself at risk or expose your
data. There have been in the past serious situations after providing too much data about
ourselves. It’s also important to know that a troll will always try to change our mood but we
should still calm and focus not showing anything that they can use against you, never take it
personally. If you keep your confidence and self-esteem intact they will finally show their lack
of self-esteem.
We must keep in mind that the troll is always wrong unless you have said something with
absolute non-sense at all. Trolls always spread hate so they are the ones with an issue, don’t
allow it to affect you. A good idea that we can use as a way of release, is to reduce your tension
writting an answer to the troll but don’t sending it. Most of the time if you answer them they
have already won. Some kinds of trolling can be very serious so it could be a good idea to keep
a copy of everything and to report it as a way to stop them. A very helpful tool is to take
advantage of your friends or the people that you use to share your experience online can be a
good shield against trolls don’t let pass the chance to receive their help.
This advice is very important because behind all this hate there is a person and more than
probably alone and suffering. And this is the best advice, never respond to them and they won’t
get what they want. Doesn't worth spending a second in this kind of conversations.

Part 2 – Critical evaluation - Word Limit: 1500
As we have summarised above in excerpt 2 of this paper, trolls are internet users who write
offensive, inconsequential or off-topic messages in a community, forum, blog or chat room and
who also aim to annoy other participants or to provoke negative reactions in them. Usually to
provoke conflict, creating an argument, provoking or simply attracting attention for the sole
purpose of having fun. The troll does not just give his opinion on a topic, he approaches the
topics of other users to judge categorically what is right and what is wrong, and he does so using
offensive terms. If an attempt is made to clarify his motives, he takes an aggressive stance and
immediately initiates the use of other fake user profiles that have been previously generated and
whose purpose is to duplicate the avalanche of aggressions, insults and disqualifications. The
troll is selfish and arrogant and accuses the victims of egocentrism and arrogance for not
admitting his bullying criteria.
