What is psychology- It is a subject which needs evidence.Any research or experiment can be carried out, as long as it is an ethical experiment.
You cannot cause any harm to participants- mental or physical.
There are 2 types of data which can be collected: categorical and continuous.
There are different methods of collecting and analysing data.
Statistics is what gives us information regarding factors that we want to measure.
Variables are what is the main focus of research in science.
One way of distinguishing between variables is the levels of measurement:
1. Nominal
2. Ordinal
3. Interval
4. Ratio
These are important as they tell us which statistical test, we are able to use.
Definitions:
Hypothesis- it is a prediction; you write down what you expect to happen.
Categorical data- the collected scores are put into categories (e.g., age, race, sex)
Continuous data- every participant provides a score which can be any value on a measurement
scale (e.g., height, weight, temperature)
Variables- something which can vary, it can take on different values/categories (e.g., gender, typing
speed, occupation). Something which can be measured and recorded.
