Unit:4 assignment:1
Forms of construction

Introduction
Knowing the suitable forms of construction is vital for the design team, and that is why I will be
discussing the different forms of low-rise construction that would and wouldn’t be suitable for mix
use sports complex. In this essay I will outline the advantages and disadvantages of each form of
low-side construction. I will also be talking about the price, the time and the aesthetic of the
building.at the end be choosing and giving sufficient reasoning for the form of construction I have
chosen.

Portal frame
Starting with the portal frame which consist of columns and sloping beams to provide structural
support for a building. The columns are bolted to the base plate that is connected to the foundation.

, Figure 1 this image shows the portal frame and what the shell of the frame looks like. This also shows how the frame is
connected to the foundations by the columns. The braces are also shown connected to the columns.

Figure 2

Also to support the column and the beams together a haunch is used and it is about 10% of the
frame span. This structure is very good for large open spaces where there is going to be a lot of
movement involved and so large open space is required. An example of where this form of
construction is used is in large grocery shops like ASDA or Sainsburys. These types of shops require a
lot of open space for shelves’ and aisles for people to walk around in so they can’t have a lot of
columns. Also having columns will interfere with the layouts that would be planned. If a supermarket
is very big the engineers can attach multiple portal frames to allow for more space and allow for a
strong stable structure. However, the downside to this is that you can’t have multiple floors due to
there being no columns to support the floor above the open space. However to solve the problem of
not having multiple floors, an structure could be attached on the side, and I will be discussing this
structure in the following paragraph.
