Nurse leaders are tasked with many objectives including leading and inspiring clinical

staff while balancing their power. The decisions they make affect the leadership team,

stakeholders, clinical staff and patients. Proper management of power is vital for effective

leaders in driving organizational outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to identify leadership

styles that support managing power in various organizational structures.


Leadership Styles and Management of Power


Nursing leadership requires a certain amount of authority and power to deliver on the

organization’s goal. Nurse leaders are tasked with leading a team to deliver effective, safe quality

patient care (Hughes, Carryer, & White, 2015). Emotional intelligence (EI) and nursing

leadership styles are closely linked to establish effective nurse leaders. [Tyc15] Tyckowski, et al.

(2015) describes emotional intelligence as:


Emotional intelligence is the ability to motivate oneself and persist in the face of

frustrations; to control impulse and delay gratification; to regulate one’s moods and keep

distress from swamping the ability to think; to empathize and hope. (p.174)


The current focus in nursing leadership is on transformational leadership, however,

nursing leaders need to use multiple styles of leadership to adapt to the dynamic changes they

experience daily. Transformational leaders possess professional maturity, excellent

communication skills, belief in the organization and trust in others. This type of leadership has

consistently shown improvement in many outcomes. Nurses led by transformational leaders

have higher self-motivation and job satisfaction rates. These nurses have improved patient safety
