There may be many reasons that the organization feels that it is important to discontinue this
benefit. With the economy in the state that it is some areas are struggling financially and may be
having a difficult time keeping their doors open to the public. SLMC may be feeling this
financial hardship and by eliminating the tuition reimbursement benefit it can help with the
retention of its employees due to the decrease in financial burden that this benefit may have to
the company.
It is always a difficult task when delivering disappointing news to your employees but when
needed it is important that all the information is conveyed directly with no surprises. Prior to
informing the employees about the benefit they are about to lose be sure that you do your
research and know the complete details as to why the organization has decided to discontinue
this program also be sure to ask upper management if this will be a permanent change of if it will
be reinstituted in the future. When the time comes to convey this information be sure that you are
direct with the message and do not beat around the bush, relay the disappointing news but also
ensure them that it is ok to be upset about the recent news[ CITATION Ali16 \l 1033 ]. There will
probably be many questions as to why the organization has decided to cancel this benefit, be sure
that you can answer their questions appropriately and if you are unable to answer at that time
ensure them that you will obtain the answer for them and will get them the information when you
find it out. It may be beneficial to research who is utilizing the tuition reimbursement benefits
and who is not and separate them when giving this news. There may be many employees that
will not be directly affected by this and there will be employees that it may be detrimental to.
Many employees do not take advantage of this benefit and may not be to upset that it is being
discontinued but the employees that do use it will be very upset that they are losing the benefit.
It is important that you keep an open door for your employees so that they can come to you if
they need to, but also convey that this decision is also in the best interest of the organization and
the retention of the employees. Understanding their concern is also important but do not express
the impression that you disagree with the organization even if you do, it can show mixed feelings
and may cause issues in the future of the organization and its employees. Always be honest when
delivering any news even when you believe it will upset many individuals.
