Assignment 1: Website Evaluation

The two websites I have chosen for this assignment are YouTube and Craigslist. These sites are very
different in appearance and function which I think will make them good for this assignment.

Website 1: YouTube

This website stands out to me because of its unique take on video streaming. YouTube is one of
many successful video streaming websites, however it is by far the most successful and profitable.
This is because it is one of few streaming websites that is not reserved for multi-million-pound
companies to release high budget blockbusters. This approach allows anyone to post videos
meaning it has way more content than its competitors, making it very appealing to the majority of
internet users. YouTube’s target audience is anyone who wants to watch and/or post videos on the
internet for free, and also companies who want to post videos to make money. It is very well suited
for its audience because it is free and also content creators can make money from their videos
because of the ads that play throughout them.

YouTube is very user-friendly. It has a simple layout making it easy for the user to navigate the
website. It also makes use of a navigation bar that helps the user to access different parts of the site
with ease. YouTube also performs very well on most systems because of its smart layout design. The
site only loads videos that you can see on your screen, and it loads more as you scroll down. Also, it
makes use of server-side scripts which are executed on the server instead of your computer which
means it can perform better and load quicker. YouTube can also be accessed on other platforms
such as mobile devices via a simpler, less demanding version of the site or via the app.

The site offers a range of accessibility options like changing the language and background colour.
There is very little white space on the page because of the videos and links that fill the area. The font
used is “Roboto” which is very similar to Arial and is a good choice that is not too bold or fancy and
is appealing to the user.
