L ANGUAGE:
2. Language Techniques

,
, 2.1.1 - Metaphors and Similes:
Metaphors:

• A metaphor is a gure of speech in which you say something is something
else. You compare the qualities of two things within this.

• For example, "The moon is a ballon": The moon is a balloon, rising into
the sky. In this phrase, you are comparing the motion of the moon rising
in the sky to the motion of a balloon as it rises. When balloons rise into
the sky, they usually move quite gently and steadily upwards. When the
moon rises, it seems to move gently and steadily upwards. In this
metaphor, it is the motion of both objects that we are looking at. Both
objects move gently and smoothly upwards.

• Some other examples are: Anger ooding, A sea of nameless faces,
Curtain of fog, etc.

Tips for Writing Metaphors:

1. Focus in the qualities of things you are comparing

2. Extend to make your ideas clearer

3. Make clear comparison

Similes:

• A simile is a gure of speech involving the comparison of one thing with
another thing of a different kind, using "like" or "as".

• For example, "He was as tough as a nail": In this phrase, the boy's
toughness is compared to the toughness of a nail.

• Other examples are: Like two peas in a pod, Black as coal, Fierce as a
lion, etc.
