HEC101V –HEALTH EDUCATION
ASSIGNMENT 02 -
SEMESTER 1 UNIQUE
NUMBER : 877195
STUDENT NUMBER : 63454432
, QUESTION ONE
1.1 According to the United Nations World Health Organisation, health is a
state of complete physical, mental and social-wellbeing, and not merely the
absence of disease and infirmity (WHO 1947:3).
1.2 In South Africa there are several environmental factors that contributes to
the ill-health of many. Majority of South Africans live in crowded townships
and informal settlements. The lack of sewer drains and services for
disposing solid and liquid waste make it easier for bacteria and viruses to
be transferred and infect people in that settlement. There is also a
shortage of clean water supply to many townships and settlements. Dirty
or used water carry diseases such as cholera. This poses a health risk and
sometimes even death. There are insufficient safe and clean fuels for
domestic cooking and heating. This means that unhealthy fuels are used
such as coal, paraffin, and wood. Burning these fuels cause pollution and
health problems for infants and children. The overcrowded and poor
standards of living cause an entire family to become ill if just one person is
infected. People who are in poverty are most prone to diseases and can not
get access to health resources. The poor management of the industrial
sector leads to contamination and pollution. This causes many health
issues for people exposed to these conditions.
1.3 From foundation phase children begin to learn the importance of caring for
nature and the environment. Learners are taught that they are part of an
overall ecosystem and have responsibilities towards the environment. In
Natural Sciences, learners are encouraged to grow plants because they
increase oxygen and they clean pollutants in the air. Learners are taught to
drink only clean water. Streams and river may have bacteria that cause
stomach and skin problems. Life Orientation also emphasises the dangers
of smoking and the negative effects of tobacco smoke on the environment.
Global warming and its causes are studied in detail. Learners are aware of
negative reactions that green house gases have on the atmosphere.
Recycle, reduce and reduce are key words that learners are familiar with.
Practicing these steps have a direct, positive impact on the environment.
Pollution in all its forms is taught to learners. The causes, effects and
solutions to pollution are studied on varying levels throughout the different
schooling phases.
