, Assignment 3 – Citizenship and diversity.

P7: Report on three examples of current affairs that affect public services and citizens.

Brexit - Brexit is the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union.
Following a UK-wide referendum in June 2016, in which 52% voted to leave and 48%
voted to remain in the EU, the British government formally announced the country's
withdrawal in March 2017, beginning the Brexit process. We ended up leaving the EU on
the 31st of January 2020, 11:00 pm GMT. The media, depending on what political party
they support will write the Brexit news in different ways. An example of this is the Daily
express paper, they are in support of the conservative party, so normally they would
have catchy titles in favour of Brexit. Such as “We must get out of the EU” whereas the
Daily mirror, a heavily Labour newspaper, will have headlines such as “Britain's worst
MP” with a picture of Boris Johnson, as he’s the MP for the Conservative party who is
leading the Brexit deals. The newspapers are political bias. Brexit affects the public
services and citizens. Over time, the public will start to see little changes made due to
Brexit and public services will also see changed arriving over time.

Coronavirus - The new Coronavirus has spread to nearly every country in the world since
it first emerged in China at the beginning of the year. More than 2.3 million people are
known to be infected and more than 161,000 deaths have been recorded - including
16,060 in the UK. Coronavirus has and will affect both citizens and the public services
massively. With the recent lockdown put in place, everyone’s normal lifestyle has
changed. Everyone must stay at home and only go out for exercise or shops for things
they need. This has affected the citizens lifestyle. Public services have been hit massively
in demand for care and support for the sick. NHS need more equipment and the police
must try and make sure people are staying to this lockdown or they’ll have to enforce a
new piece of legislation bought in for this lockdown. The media can once again be
political bias about this matter. As the conservative party oversees keeping us safe,
labour party newspapers will report on weather Boris Johnson did things soon enough
and sometimes put the blame on him for not acting sooner. They do this to try and show
to the public that the conservative party isn’t up to doing the job and once the next
election takes place, they hope to bring new labour supports on board.

Knife crime - Knife crime is crime involving a knife. It's a crime to threaten someone
with a knife or carry a knife as a weapon in a robbery or burglary. Police can search you
if they think you're carrying a knife. Some knives are offensive weapons and are banned
in public places. The public services, police in particularly are affected by knife crime and
knife crime increases as they are tasked with lowering the number of reported knife
crime offences. More money and resources have been put into dealing with knife crime
in certain areas of the UK. More officers patrolling certain well-known hot spots means
that less officers are available for other things. The media try to show to the public that
the justice system and police services aren't doing what everyone thinks. An example of
this would be that the public assume that all criminals go to jail, the Daily mail try to
picture this as wrong. “Posing for a selfie outside court yesterday after dodging prison
for the second knife offence, yet another thug … Smirking as soft justice Britain” This is
trying to show to the public that people aren't getting the justice they deserve/think they
are getting.

P8: Present information on how the media reports current affairs involving public
services.
