Bottom-up approach Assessment

Tasks:

1. Produce an offender profile for the crime in the case study using the
Bottom-up approach. (P5) (M3) (D3)
2. Explain the bottom-up technique and how it’s been used in your profile.
Refer to the theory underpinning this approach. (P6)
3. Assess two strengths and two weaknesses of using the bottom-up
technique in your case. (P6) (M4) (D3)

Case Study:

Police were called to a house where they found a body in the kitchen. The victim
was a 20 year old woman with a pale freckled complexion and long fair hair parted
in the middle. She was stabbed to death with a single blow to the heart, and there
were other stab injuries to her abdomen that formed the pattern of a star. There
were no other visible signs of injury. She was carefully placed on the floor with her
hands resting on her stomach and bound with a ribbon.

You should continue to produce your own offender profile based on the case study
above. Here is some more information to help you:

Detectives noticed several points of similarity between this crime scene and three
others within a ten mile radius. The pathology reports indicated the time of death in
all cases was between 9 and 11am. Also in all cases, there was an attempt to
remove evidence from the scene.

1.Produce an offender profile for the crime in the case study using the Bottom-up
approach. (P5) (M3) (D3)

Bottom Up

, Produce a report about your offender:

Interpersonal coherence: how they “There were no other visible signs of
behaved at the crime scene and injury”. This suggests that the offender was
incontrol of crime and physically strong and
towards victim suggests how they dominant as there were no signs of struggle.
behave in everyday life (eg. violence,
aggression, control, dominance, “The victim was found in the kitchen”.
manipulation, apologetic etc.) This suggests that the offender was
manipulative as they managed to gain the
trust of the victim enough for her to let them
into the house.

“her hands resting on her stomach and
bound with a ribbon”. This could suggest
that the offender was apologetic and
respected of the victim as he stayed the
victim's body in a more presentable and
respectful way. This means that the victim
could be an ex-partner or friend.

Time and place “Between 9 and 11am”. This suggests that
Speculate likely movements during the offender is mostly likely unemployed as
those were the times that the minority of
the day eg. employed or unemployed people are at work.

Geographical profile - where they “Within a ten mile radius”. According to
are living: Circle theory- Marauder or circle theory, the offender is most likely to be
commuter a marauder and that they live locally to the
crime scene/victim.

Forensic awareness: the extent to “Also in all cases, there was an attempt to
which the offender has covered their remove evidence from the scene”. This
shows that the offender has some forensic
tracks suggests their familiarity with awareness as they tried to cover their tracks,
police investigative techniques which also suggests that they have some
familiarity with police investigative
techniques.

“There were no visible signs of injury”.
This could possibly show that the offender
has some knowledge into how to cover any
possible injury. This hints at some familiarity
with police techniques.

Physical appearance “The victim was a 20 year old woman with
a pale freckled complexion” . This would
suggest that the offender is mostly likely white
male around the age of 20. This is because
most case of serious crimes, such as murder,
the offender tends to be the opposite sex,
similar age and similiar ethnicity.
