Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
✓ Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
✓ You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
✓ This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
✓ Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
✓ You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
✓ Write 300 - 500 words.
Overall, the Cutting Edge Advanced coursebook is well structured with a clearly laid out contents
page which sets out the unit topics that cover a range of interests such as globalisation, money,
fashion and self help. These topics are most certainly relevant to the target class of early advanced,
mixed nationality adults at C1/C2 level. The contents also sets out the language focus, vocabulary
and skills to be covered in the lessons. This allows teachers and students to navigate effectively
through the book and prepares them well for the learning objectives of the lessons.
The unit on Globalisation presents the language appropriately and logically for advanced level
students and seems to use the task based approach where students are asked to work in pairs and
groups to converse and collaborate with one another whilst completing various activities. The
language skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking are given adequate attention throughout
the unit and are covered sufficiently through the various activities, ranging from answering simple
questions in pairs and groups, reading articles, listening to recordings and writing reports. This
allows the students to develop both receptive and productive skills. Vocabulary is also recycled
and revised throughout the unit, and there is a Grammar Review which allows for concept
checking of the grammar continuous verb forms in order to check how well the students have
understood how to use this form within the context given. A variety of English language is also
presented to help students understand the differences in pronunciation and accents amongst
speakers of English across the world.
The activities start off relatively simple, with students working in pairs and groups to discuss their
experiences of globalisation, but then become more challenging through more detailed
discussions, presenting arguments and writing reports. This might pose a problem for students
who lack confidence in speaking and presenting viewpoints . However, the activities are varied,
structured well and reflect real life situations to which students can relate, such as talking about
how globalisation has had an effect on them.
The graphics are appealing and very relevant to the topic of globalisation, and the reading and
listening materials seem authentic using real life examples and are very much appropriate for
advanced learners from different nationalities.
