P1- Explain how work experience can support the development of own professional skills and personal
attributes for work in the health and social care sector.
In the health and social care sector the development of professional skills and personal attributes is
vital when we are completing work experience. Work experience is there to provide us with many skills
and developmental opportunities, preparing ourselves for the working life in the health and social care
industry. In work experience, individuals will develop many skills, a skill is defined by the ability or
talent to do something well and this can be communication, organisational, teamwork, problem-solving,
and reflective. Individuals will also be aided in their development of their attributes during work
experience, this is defined by a quality which contributes to who you are and helps to form your
personality. We can see that attributes are compassion, positivity, peace, patience, professionalism,
honesty and supportive. Reflection is a key aspect for development in work experience. It’s vital that
individuals reflect on their own skills and attributes as well as the areas of development they could be
aided in. Reflective practice means that individuals are constantly thinking about an event, this is in
order to learn from it. This can. Be described as what went well? And what did the individual do to make
the event go well and use what you have learned in this scenario to repeat the success in the future.
However, if something didn’t go as well as expected, the individual could think about why this was so in
order to improve on this in the future. I could use reflection in my work experience to further improve
the areas I am struggling in and value the areas I am confident in. In work experience, developing
professionalism means to comply with the standards set by the workplace, and by the regulatory
bodies. This can include following the policies and procedures, treating others with respect, being
punctual and having regular attendance, finishing tasks to a high standard and on time, acting
appropriately and responsibly, dressing appropriate, listening carefully, and doing what you say you will
to the best of your ability. Work experience can support the development of professional skills as it will
enable individuals to observe the standards being set by other health and social care professionals and
follow these in the future. I could use developing professionalism to prepare myself for a future career
where I will have to upkeep a professional attitude. Communication and interpersonal skills are both a
method of communicating with others, however communication involves listening, speaking, non-verbal
messages and written which allows individuals to exchange information with other people. Having good
communication skills are vital for preparing for a career in the health and social care sector as they
allow individuals to develop positive relationships with not only service users but also those around
them in the workplace environment, it allows individuals to report on the work they do with the service
users and share this information to people using the services which is vital for person-centred care.
Work experience aims to support the development of my communication skills by enabling myself to
work on my communication skills in preparation for having a career in the health and social care sector
as a paramedic. Whereas interpersonal means using skills that allow individuals to interact and
communicate successfully with others, this is through face-to-face communication. This can be seen
through facial expressions, gestures and even the way individuals dress will send a message to others.
This skill is vital for the health and social care sector, this can be seen through individuals presenting
themselves as approachable and caring. For example, if an individual wad to present themselves with
these characteristics, then they will be more likely to develop positive relationships with other
individuals, including the service users, this is because they will be more likely to engage in a
conservation. Work experience will help to develop my interpersonal skills as they will enable myself to
observe the way other health and social care professionals present themselves to others, and I can
follow this way of communicating, ready for my future career as a paramedic. Organisational skills are
defined as the skills that our needed to keep organised. This can be seen through having good time
management skills, by developing this skill through work experience, individuals will feel more in
control as any outstanding tasks will be finished, this reduces the feelings of stress and worries than
are associated with being unorganised. Having good time management can be seen through prioritizing
tasks and making sure that there are well maintained breaks which allow individuals to relax, this will
make their work more effective. Another major aspect of organisational skills is being able to prioritize
tasks, this means that individuals complete the tasks which are most important first. A very good
system used for prioritization is the traffic light system which uses green, amber, and red to prioritize
tasks. For example, green means that the task needs completing straight away, amber means to do the
task later or the next day, and red means that the task is not urgent and can be completed in the next
few days. Work experience would support my organisational skills because these skills are essential for
a future career in health and social care as a paramedic. The work experience would enable myself to
further advance my organisational skills which will enable me to perform a task to the best of my ability
without rushing and being disorganised. Technical skills can be defined as the set of abilities or
knowledge to perform practical tasks which is used in the form of data handling and using specialist
equipment. Data means to be any form of information in any presentation and the way individuals
handle this data is very important. This information must be recorded and gathered in a systematic
manner and its essential that the data is accurate as it needs to be accessible and useful for other
health and social care providers to use it. There are various legislations that individuals must follow
within the work experience environment and health and social care sector. One of these being the
general data protection regulation which is there to protect service users’ confidentiality. Individuals
will also use specialist equipment whilst they are completing their work experience, this will be to meet

, the needs of service users who have physical barriers. This can be seen through a hoist being used to
lift an older less mobile service user. Work experience will aid my development of technical skills as in
my future career I will be collecting data regardless of my health and social care professional and
specialist equipment may be used so having the experience of this before my career will prepare
myself with the vital skills they need. In the health and social care sector teamwork skills are vital for
individuals to develop, this is because they are essential to ensure that both the service users and
professionals get the care and support that they need. This can be seen through multi-disciplinary team
working and multi-agency working. Where different health and social care professionals work together
in order to provide service users with the most appropriate service of care. Work experience will
support individuals in developing their teamwork skills as individuals can observe the effective
communication techniques that other health and social care professional’s use. Confidence is defined
as how an individual feels about their ability to perform certain roles or tasks. In the health and social
care sector is essential that the professionals are confident as their daily role will be to discuss and
provide medical and social care to service users. Confidence can be viewed as a positive state of mind
that can be boosted by individuals through thinking positively, having an “I can” attitude and focusing
on the things that are successful for you. It is also beneficial to have a good network of people who
support the individual as this will benefit their confidence. Work experience will support the
development of my confidence as the increased experience will give myself an expectation of what my
future career could be like, this will also allow myself to develop their initiative skills. In the health and
social care sector personal responsibility is another essential skill which is needed as individuals must
be responsible for their actions and take up accountability for the action and decisions, they choose for
someone. Work experience helps in the development of my personal responsibility skills as on work
experience, I am required to do what is expected of me in a way which doesn’t create an extra work for
other professionals or creates any problems. This prepares myself for my future career as a paramedic
where i will have to be held accountable for whatever I choose to do in my role. The ability to link
theory to practice is essential when completing work experience. We can see that this is essential
because learnt skills from the classroom can be used when on work experience to provide efficient and
effective care. For example, individual can learn how to interact with an older person, therefore when
the situation rises in work experience when an elderly service user becomes agitated, the individual is
able to understand that the elderly service users is just frustrated that they are losing their
independence rather than being rude directly at the individual. This will prepare myself for the
scenarios in work experience where i may have to approach situations differently due to a service user
having differentiating needs.

In the health and social care sector diversity is very important. It is important that individuals know to
value the differences between people, such as cultures, beliefs, gender, age, and disability. Individuals
must know that it is a legal requirement that all health and social care professionals to respect and
value all individuals, regardless of there being any cultural or religious beliefs, attitudes, and
differences. Work experience will support the development of myself respecting diversity as I will meet
service users that share different characteristics than I do, and I will have to respect this in a way that
still meets the service users care and support needs. It is also vital that the individual respects equality
in the health and social care sector. Equality means that everyone has equal access to the services that
they require, and they are able to receive a service that meets their personal needs, this is regardless
of where they live or how they live their life. it Is essential that service users are treated equally as by
taking into account service users’ different beliefs and abilities, when providing them with care and
treatment. In work experience this will help me to support the development of respecting equality as I
may be faced with situations where service users have barriers due to their cultural/ religious
differences. For example, a Jehovah’s witness will not accept a blood transfusion, and this must be
respected. In the health and social care sector it is also very important that individuals are able to
respect confidentiality and dignity in care. The health and social care professionals have a duty of
confidentiality that protects the rights of individuals. This means that they must keep information
confidential, which means that the service users’ information cannot be shared without their knowledge
and agreement, this applies to the family and friends of the service user. It’s essential that the
confidentiality is maintained as this will also safeguard the service user. For example, if a picture of a
child with abusive parents was uploaded onto social media, this could lead to the child being located
and put into further danger due to the safeguard issue. It is also very important that the dignity of
service users is protected by myself whilst I am completing my work experience. We can see this is
because elderly residents may become embarrassed and distressed if their dignity is taken away. For
example, an elderly resident at a care home may want to complete a task independently, individuals
can respect their dignity by recognising their ability to complete the task and being patient as they
may take a longer time to complete the task, this result will leave the elderly resident feeling happy
that their independence was promoted as well as their dignity. Work experience will help with my
development of respecting confidentiality and dignity skills as I will have to actively do this with the
service users I interact with whilst completing my work experience placement which will further
improve my skills in this area. Before beginning work experience, it is essential that individuals
understand health, safety, and security whilst in the service provision. It is essential that individuals
