The ovum is the scientific word for the egg cell and this is a gamete. This is the

female’s reproductive cell that is located within the female’s reproductive system. It is

also a large size for two reasons, due to the storage of nutrients and also the ovum

contains a majority of a all organelles, DNA, and nutrients that are required for

zygote growth.

The ovum is inadequate of actively moving as it is static. During fertilization, when

the sperm cell meets the ovum, it will become a diploid cell and create a zygote. This

will gradually create a new organism.

The ovum has a nucleus, cytoplasm and cellular membrane. Located within the

nucleus is half of the genetic material, also known as the chromosomes. There are a

total of 46 chromosomes, 23 in the ovum and 23 in the spermatozoa.

The cytoplasm is essential for storing all foods and nutrients. The ovum has a large

volume of cytoplasm as it contains mitochondria that produce the ATP required for

mitosis that comes after fertilization.
