DISCUSSION
Week 6 Discussion 1: Religion & The Environment
Evaluate various religions’ attitudes towards humanity’s relationship with the
environment.
Answer:
It was stated by the Director of Publications at the World watch Institute; an
environmental research organization based in Washington, D.C that religions matter a lot in how
one takes care of the environment. There is no doubt that 95 percent people in this world are
following a religion of their choice (Lippiatt, B. C. 2017). That religion affects their way of
thinking & performing everyday duties. Almost every religion has a good relationship with
environment like in Christianity; it is believed that one should respect the world in order to
respect God as he created it. In fact, for working in order to highlight the importance of
environmentalism for Christians in the world today, the head of the Catholic Church, Pope
Francis, has been nicknamed "the Green Pope". On the other hand like Christians, Muslims also
believe that this World is a gift by God (Allah) & they need to take care of not only the world but
the animals & environment that come with it. Even in Buddhism people are prompted to protect
animals, stop pollution, clean up trash from nature & etc. Most religions are old & their
teachings have not changed with time. Hence, no matter from which religion one belongs too
they need to take care of the environment.
Week 6 Discussion 2: Environmental Concern & Groups
Evaluate how the level of environmental concern varies among different groupings (social,
economic, racial, national, etc.).
