TWE agree on economy?
Paragraph 1 revolutionary and democratic socialists want capitalism abolished and to be replaces with an
economy based on collective ownership of property and workers controlling the means of production. They want
this as the believe in creating a fairer society through the economy, as wealth would be split up more.
- Democratic socialist Webb wants to remove capitalism via the ballot box to achieve a fully nationalised
economy where workers obtain the means of production through common ownership. This was an idea
Webb expressed in the ‘minority report of the poor law commission’.
- Similarly, Marx and Engels believe that capitalism is corrupt and needs to be removed through a revolution
to an economy which is commonly owned, arguing in the ‘communist manifesto’ that the proletariat will
achieve class consciousness and overthrow capitalism.
Howeverthis is not felt throughout the ideology and TW just want full privatisation.
Paragraph 2 Evolutionary socialist agree that capitalism can be reformed of its exploitative tendencies and create
equality of opportunity within society.
- Third way Giddens argues for a free market capitalist economy which is more efficient that the socialist
models, arguing that it will use tax revenues to create a hand up welfare, providing indivivduals with
resources and equality of opportunity. This was an idea adopted by Tony Blair, who accepted the
privatisation od national utilities by the conservatives and created a national minimum wage to ensure
equality of opportunity.
- Social democrat Crosland believed capitalism had largely been reformed of it’s exploitative tendencies and
wanted to use the wealth of capitalism to provide cradle to grave welfare which would lead to equality of
opportunity. He wanted Keynesian capitalism so that there was a society with economic growth and
employment.
Howeverthey disagree upon the extent of reforming capitalism and the welfare created.
Paragraph 3there is a disagreement among socialists over capitalism in the economy.
- Revolutionary socialist M&E and Luxemburg aim for a revolution against capitalism and to overthrow the
economic structure. Luxemburg argues that the proletariat’s struggle for reform will lead to class
consciousness and therefore the overthrowing of the bourgeoisie.
- On the other hand, Social Democrat Crosland would reject the overthrowing of capitalism as he accepts the
thriving private sector economy that is created via capitalism. Crosland advocated Keynesian economics.
Paragraph 4disagree over the nature and form of equality within the economy.
- Revolutionary Socialist Marx wanted absolute quality. Meaning that the economy was based on common
ownership. When material rewards were based on their needs, each individual contributes and takes what
they need.
- On the other hand, TW Giddens dismisses absolute equality as a flawed concept, instead focuses on equality
of opportunity targeting the neediest in society, as he didn't want to create discentive to work, as this would
damage the economy.
