You are a level 3 apprentice laboratory technician employed by
Monarch Chemicals, a UK based company manufacturing a variety of
inorganic chemicals.

Every three months you undertake an assessment that allows the
Vocational Scenario or
company to monitor your progress and provide evidence that you
Context
are meeting the technical competencies you must master in order to
complete your apprenticeship. In this assignment brief you will
complete an assessment activity to demonstrate your knowledge of
how enthalpy and entropy help to predict the ease with which a
reaction will take place under given reaction conditions.

Using your lesson notes and research into enthalpy and entropy
complete the following assessment activities:

1) Enthalpy investigations
Carry out the following investigations to demonstrate accurate
measurements of enthalpy changes. You will determine by calculation
Task 1 different enthalpy changes in kJ per mole from the temperature
changes measured for:
 The dissolving of anhydrous sodium carbonate in water
 The dissolving of ammonium chloride in water
 The neutralisation of hydrochloric acid with sodium hydroxide
 Reaction of sulfuric acid and magnesium
 The combustion of an alcohol
You will need to research suitable methods to safely measure the
temperature changes for these reactions and check your methods
with your teacher before undertaking any practical work.

 Assess the quality of your results by comparing your data
against that of other apprentices and with literature values for
