Vaccination: Varicella (VAR)
Trade Name: Varivax (Kota et al., 2020)
Type: Attenuated (live)
Contraindication: Person with severe reaction to neomycin or gelatin, current illness including
fever (Kota et al., 2020)
Precautions: Persons who are immunocompromised, pregnant, or planning to become pregnant
(Kota et al., 2020)
Adverse drug reactions: soreness or swelling at the injection site, fever, or vaccine associated
rash (Kota et al., 2020)
Minimum age: 12 months (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC], 2019)
Routine vaccination schedule: 1st dose (0.5mL) 12-15 months, 2nd dose (0.5mL) 4-6 years (CDC,
2019)
Minimum interval between doses (if applicable): If younger than 13, at least three months, if
older than 13 with no prior history of varicella vaccine 4 to 8 weeks (Woo & Robinson, 2016)
Special situations: Administration to unvaccinated children within 3 days after exposure to
varicella rash is 90% effective in preventing varicella from occurring and 70% effective if
administered within 5 days of the exposure. Post-exposure prophylaxis is 100% successful in
reducing the severity of chickenpox (Woo & Robinson, 2016).
