concepts, one of the major elements of NI, but new to most nurses. Does this
have an application to your practice? Why or why not?
Nursing care involves the components of the nursing process, which includes
assessment, plan, implementation, and evaluation (Sengstack, 2012). Nursing informatics
specialists include these four elements into projects that benefit the clinicians and the
patients. It takes a team of people to design healthcare informatics systems, from vendors
who focus on infrastructure to advanced practice nurses (APNs) who specialize in
informatics to the end user being the clinical nurse (Sengstack, 2012). APNs who
specialize in informatics and take on project management can function as an important
connection between the informatics team and the medical staff or nurses. These APNs
have an expansive knowledge of informatics as well as the nursing process, they are able
to bridge communications between their departments and the clinical settings.
Project management concepts do affect my practice, although I do not physically
participate in it on a daily or even yearly basis. I am, however, an end user so therefore if
a NI specialist needed information for their project they could include my input.

You are so right, it was not very long ago that the different teams did not communicate
with each other. It was like pulling teeth just to get the doctors to collaborate on the
patients care! Now, thanks to technology and research, the doctors are so much better at
communicating with one another and an interdisciplinary approach is taken when caring
for patients. The ICU has used this approach for a while but I have noticed the other
floors using this approach as well. Also, they have incorporated this kind of thinking into
the doctor’s education, which is extraordinary because they come out of school with this
mindset. This makes interdisciplinary care much easier to accomplish. From reading your
post it is easy to see how much harder work becomes when members of a team do not
have this mindset.
