A Christmas Carol
Context
• When Charles Dickens had to work in a factory because his dad was
arrested and sent to prison for debt, he had to work in a factory. It was a
severely traumatic experience. He viewed his job as a miserable trap and
considered himself too good for it.
• Dickens wanted his novella to draw attention to the plight of the poor.
Recurring theme in Dicken’s work was social criticism.
• Throughout the novella, Dickens combines indirect descriptions of hardship
faced by the poor with a sentimental celebration of the Christmas Season.
• The novella emphasizes the importance of social responsibility.
• Dickens uses the Novella to argue that the poor – especially the rich – has a
responsibility to help those less fortunate.
• He saw Christmas as a special festive time of year when people treated
each other with generosity , a time of peaxce and goodwill to everybody
and he believed that this attitude should continue all year round. Marley’s
ghost conveys the whole message when he says:
“Mankind Was my business”
This makes the reader learn that the proper business of life is not financial gain
but taking concern and interest for other people’s wellbeing and in terms of
helping them.
• Dickens also emphasizes the importance of education through his
presentation of the two children “Ignorance” and “Want.”
• To a certain extent, Dickens regards Ignorance as more dangerous and
worse that poverty and the way he describes that and the amount of
graphical description that he uses to highlight the effective ignorance and
deprivation. It shows us how the rule of education can fight against poverty
and London, A major City that is poverty – stricken.
• “Corrupting nature of poverty”.
• “Social Responsibility”. Theme that is present throught the entire novella.
