NOTES CONSOLIDATION:
WILHELM WUNDT: 1832-1920- ‘FATHER OF PSYCHOLOGY’
1879: WUNDT OPENED THE FIRST PSYSCHOLOGY LABORATORY IN LEIPZIG GERMANY.
Wundt was important because he separated psychology from philosophy by analysing the
workings of the mind in a more structured way.
His approach to psychology was to study the structure of the human mind, by breaking
down the behaviours into their basic elements.

His approach therefore became known as STRUCTURALISM

WUNDT:
 Created his own method of INTROSPECTION to investigate the human mind.
 This is the examination of one’s own thought processes.

WUNDT’S RESEARCH:
 The whole experiment was carried out in a lab environment.
 All introspections were recorded under strictly controlled conditions using the same
stimulus every time.
 Standardised instructions were issued to all participants and he made sure there
were no distractions.
 These factors ensured a controlled environment.

Strengths of Wundt’s work:
 Introduced the scientific method and the use of the laboratory environment to
psychology.
 The cognitive approach still examines our mind and the internal mental processes.

Weaknesses of Wundt's work:
 Claimed to be scientific, but the method of introspection was very subjective. We
cannot see if the sensations a participant is writing down are true.
 Wundt only tested a few people and therefore generalised emotions.
