In this assignment, I’m going to talk about the relationship of psychological
perspective with the understanding of development and behaviour of humans. I will
explore as well the relationship between perspectives and how individuals can be
treated with identified behaviour traits in health and social care services.
I have chosen two case studies of which I’m going to talk about one of which is
Debbie T., who has OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) and she finds the needs
to disinfect her hands constantly to avoid being in contact with germs. The other
case study is about a young adult called Ahmed H., who has an eating addiction and
by dealing with this, he tends to throw away his food when he is on his own.

The term psychology can be identified as the studies of individuals minds within
society, even individuals with different behaviour traits.
The behaviourist perspective clarifies the behaviour about a specific group of beliefs
and opinions. The main objective about behaviourist perspective is it achievable to
comprehend different types of behaviour by observing what an individual has
acquired. This will be based on the personality, if the person appears to be shy,
having a lot of confidence, being optimistic or and pessimistic.
The advantages of this perspective are they support the debate when it comes to
nature and nurture as the perspective has obtained a variety of applications and
strategies to develop behaviour for instance using awards in education field.
The disadvantages, however, in the other hand are that the approach doesn’t look at
at the process of the brain that are included in learning. Corresponding with the
perspective, the theorists believed that individuals are only allowed to acquire
knowledge through their life experiences.
If we apply the behaviouristic behaviour on the behaviour of Debbie T. we can see
that there a response of fear of having germs constantly in her hands and that is why
she’s using disinfectant on her hands. Likewise with Ahmed his response towards
his eating disorder is to avoid eating by achieving his weight loss. These behaviours
illustrated by the two individuals show what maladaptive behaviour is. Maladaptive
behaviour is when a person behaves in a certain way to avoid being stressful when
facing their fears. Having these types of behaviours for both Debbie and Ahmed can
lead them to more problems that they might have to face in the future by applying
their coping mechanism on the first one e.g, Debbie has to constantly keep her hand
clean and by over washing her hands, it might cause they to have eczema whereas
for Ahmed, if he keeps on avoiding his food this might lead him to develop complex
digestive problems like anorexia nervosa. This means that both Debbie and Ahmed
need advance treatments for their situations.
The social learning theory visualises how people observe and pattern their own
behaviour through modelling. Modelling consists of a process that people have to
look and imitate the same behaviour if the model appreciate of if the participant has
no knowledge of this process. This is why is important that the role of the models is
appreciated especially by the younger audience as they adapt the behaviour that
they see. Even through peer pressure the behaviour can be adapted by the admirers
and this can cause good or and bad behaviour to be brought out of them. This can
only be brought out if the admirers appreciate the behaviour as positive behaviour
brings out appreciative responses from others. Self efficacy is similar to motivation
that people need in order to differentiate themselves with their behaviours. What can
be a disadvantage about this theory is that behaviour cannot be changed even after
the person has moved to a different environment of where they grew up in.
If we relate the social learning theory to Ahmed situation, Ahmed might have chose
to reject food in order to achieve his weight loss because of what he might have
heard his friends say about easy ways to loose weight. Whereas for Debbie she
might have learnt that by keeping her hands constantly sanitised she might avoid
having germs in her hands all the time. This can be their way of coping but it can be
result of being a maladaptive behaviour and also passive aggression.
The humanistic perspective concentrates on a human in general, visualising the
aspects that a person will have in their lives e.g. how an individual brain works and
