Final personal statement

My childhood experiences inspired me to pursue Child Nursing : my parents have always been busy
with their work but also caring about my physical health and wellbeing . My interest in this particular
subject developed by their work ethics, I became a young career to my other siblings when one of
my parents was unwell.
I have researched the qualities needed in students for the course which are understanding,
compassion and admiration; because I’m a young carer, I have developed these skills and a complex
understanding of how to treat service users.
I am currently studying Health and Social Care and in the previous months I have learned two units
called ‘Principles of Safe Practice’ and ‘Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs’. What I have
realised from these units are hygiene observation is crucial across the wards in health institutions
and I have also learnt that if I ever was to be in that situation, I will be able to apply the codes of
practice with the legislations with the required practical uses in every setting. In this current
pandemic, especially, it is very important to practice how to apply correct PPE. With the guidance of
a trained nurse that visited my college, I was taught how to do this. In the other units I have
learned the different types of ethical issues that can be present in a health and social care
environment as there will be people with different cultures and background that may not be used to
the United Kingdom, coming to hospitals for their needs. I am able to speak Italian and English
fluently; being understood and being able to communicate with verbal and non- verbal skills are
important skills that I have learned within the ‘Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs’ unit.
This would support me in my nursing career as those skills can be more powerful than big words:
they would help me understand how truly a patient feels.

I have completed an online work experience called the ‘COVID-19: Effective nurses in times of crisis’
where I understood how I can detect the different characteristics of this virus and how can it be an
impact to the population. From this I have learnt the importance of health systems in addressing the
epidemic and how they can help promoting recovery. As well as this, with this programme I am able
to realise that nurses have an important role in this pandemic as knowledge and confidence should
be applied in nursing care. I have found this programme helpful as I have learnt in college from the
unit “Principles of Safe Practice” the importance of protecting myself from infections by using PPE
and correct hand washing . Additionally, I have completed another online work experience called
Nursing and Midwifery On Demand-BOB! on SpringPod, there were different activities such as
quizzes about ‘life as a Child Nurse’ to complete and also videos and pre recorded webinars meeting
up with nurses in the NHS environment to watch. There were also quizzes that reflected on the
speciality of children’s nursing, how a nurse should communicate with young children. From doing
this I have obtained an understanding of the values that nurses should have in their workplaces and
the different responsibilities that Child Nurses have in particular such as handling injections and
medications of the service users.

Child nursing is the subject that I would like to study at university because I believe children deserve
to be supported and their needs have to be heard; the personal qualities that would allow me to
work effectively as a child nurse are being organised and being able to schedule.
