Explain the purpose of a given team in a chosen
business

Introduction

In this section I will be introducing two businesses which are Ark St Albans and Tesco. I will then
explain why the team exists and what the team is trying to achieve. A team is a group of people that
work together to achieve a goal for their department. There are 4 different types of teams which can
include cross-functional, virtual, self-managed and functional teams. A functional team is when a
group of people share a specific expertise in a field and work towards achieving the goal. A cross-
functional team is when there are different people from different departments, and they work
together. A self-managed team is a team that consists of employees that are from the same
organisation where incorporate themselves together. A virtual team is a group of people from
different locations where they will communicate electronically to achieve their goal. For the Ark St
Albans I will be using the catering team as an example of a team while for Tesco I will be using the
bakery team.

Ark St Albans

Ark St Albans is a type of not-for-profit organisation which is part of an organisation called ARK. Ark
is a type of international charity as they operate in countries which include UK, South Africa, India
and Zimbabwe. ARK has about 38 schools which are registered with the organisation and has more
than 24,000 students that attend ARK students around the world. Ark St Albans is a type of
secondary school and sixth form which is part of ARK and they have different teams which operate in
the school. For example, some types of teams which are in St Albans include catering team, sixth
form team, department team and much more.

I will be using the catering team as an example of a team which is in Ark St Albans. In the catering
team they are different people which are part of the team which include the chef, staff who serve
the food out, catering manager, supervisor and much more. The purpose of the catering team is that
they provide food for students in ark by making sure their food is cooked well and healthy for them
to eat. This is important because if the catering team provide unhealthy food to students, then this
can have a bad impact on the school as they will be seen to have a bad reputation. In addition,
providing healthy menu options for the students can help them focus more on class as food in high
sources of vitamins and nutrition will help promote children’s growth and development processes.

Moreover, if the catering staff in Ark St Albans is seen to promote healthy eating, then this can boost
their own reputation because if the school is on the news, then more students will come to the
school as they provide good nutrients for their students to perform their best. The catering team in
Ark St Albans wants to make sure they prepare their food in good quality for students to eat and
make sure they have good hygiene because if they don’t then students will get poisoned and
potentially very sick which can affect the catering team a lot as they prepared their food. This can
result the catering team getting kicked out of the school because they aren’t being professional in
how they make their food. This can them be reported to the food standards agency where they can
deal with this issue and prosecute the catering team.

Therefore, catering team main purpose is to make sure they create good food for the children as
well as reduce the number of unhealthy products towards the student as they can create a timetable
where they can issue unhealthy products once a week to make it safe for students as they do not
want to be obese. Overall, the reason why a catering team exists is to provide the right type of food
for students to make sure they are ready to back in their class and study well as well as concentrate
in their class by performing their best overall.

As there are different types of people who works in the catering team, these include a dietitian who
give advice towards the chef by creating nutritious food for the students, the chef makes the food
and prepares new requests made by the dietitian who tells the chef on what types of food is healthy
for the students, kitchen staff who wash the dishes and clean up and there are staff who wait behind
the till to and give out the food to the students Overall, the catering team is important in Ark St
Albans because they want to provide the best quality food for students in the whole school by
making sure they have the right type of nutrients as this will give them good performance to work
hard in their lessons.

Tesco

Tesco is a type of multinational business which is based in the United Kingdom. Tesco operates in 13
different countries and they have diversified its product range into things like books, clothing,
electronics, petrol, furniture, toys and much more. Tesco has many departments/teams that operate
in the business which includes bakery department, person working in the self-checkouts and much
more. I will be using the bakery department where they oversee providing bakery to consumers
visiting the store which includes bread, bagels, baguettes, biscuits and much more. The purpose of
the bakery team is that they provide goods which include baguettes, biscuits and more.

For example, a bakery team in Tesco will include a staff member in the counter who will serve
customers if they want to buy, bakers who will create the products which includes bread, baguettes
and more, other kitchen staff who will perform duties which includes cleaning, buying the products
and helping the baker. A bakery team is important because they need to make sure they create the
best products for consumers to buy as this will make Tesco look good and increase their brand
awareness.

For example, if one of their bread was uncooked and quite hard on the inside then consumers can
complain which can affect the bakery team as they did not cook the bread properly. Furthermore, a
bakery team will be supervised by a superior to make sure they are preparing the products at the
highest quality, so they can gain some form of recognition. Overall, the reason why the bakery
department exists in Tesco is that they want to provide fresh bakery for consumers visiting Tesco.

It’s important for the bakery team in Tesco to make sure their products are safe to consume because
if one of the consumers get food poisoning then this can affect Tesco and ruin their reputation as a
business because they are well known around the world. This will therefore be reported to the
standards food agency as they will take care of it and prosecute the catering member who did this.
To conclude the catering team, want to provide fresh bakery for consumers and make consumers
keep on buying their products if they are fresh.
