CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM - Body’s master control unit, receives information from the
senses, processes it and initiates a response. Made up of the brain and the spinal cord.
PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM - Connects the CNS to the external environment
(senses), has 2 subsystems: somatic and autonomic.
SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM - Carries sensory information from the organs to the CNS
and relays motor commands to effectors. Controls voluntary via skeletal muscles etc.
AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM - Regulates involuntary processes such as digestion by
controlling the action of smooth muscles and glands. Contains two subdivisions: sympathetic
and parasympathetic. Only has motor pathways.
SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM - Involved in the fight or flight response. Effects
include increased heart rate, dilated pupils and decreased digestion rate.This response
occurs due to stress.
PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM- Involved in the ret and digest response. Effects
included decreased heart rate. This response occurs when a stressor is no longer present.
