WEEK 7: MODERN MUSIC
3636 unread replies.9191 replies.
Consider popular music's impacts over the past century. Let's look into its creative
elements, which are often mass-produced works of art such as albums, concerts,
videos, online promotion, controversy, rivalries, hype, explicit or outrageous behavior
calculated to arouse attention, promote a cause, celebrate an emotion, spark an idea,
cash in on a fad, create a trend, peddle a product, and/or generate trend-setting.
Share artifacts. Lyrics, videos, concerts, album covers, posters, merchandise, and/or
song samples? Emphasize your own ideas, andanalyze the visible/ audible
artifact you provide. Don't simply post a video, words of a song, a photo, or an album.
(This assists you with Week 7: Reflection Assignment: Experiencing Music.)

Buzzcocks, "Boredom" (1977)
After the Sex Pistols play Manchester, 4 local fans start their own label (for the first-
ever indie recording, they borrowed £500) to release a 4-song, 10-minute 45: the
third record released in English punk. They alternate the genre's raw delivery with a
jittery, catchy riff and sharp drums. Clever lyrics, an odd vocal. Repetitive but not
boring: 2 notes played 66 times in 2:51. This inspired Do-It-Yourself record labels to
take chances. Its modest success proved musicians did not need majors. Self-made,
self-issued songs emerge; punk inspires music making by ordinary people. No
matter the genre, self-releases continue via the internet; meanwhile, with sales
declining, the cost of concerts--and merchandise--soars. Today's artists seek rather
than deny corporate sponsorship. Musicians now must figure out how, as Buzzcocks
did, to break through/ out.

Interesting angle about musicians finding a way to break through/out. I know this is
the hardest struggle, especially if you are set up for greatness. I was trying to
remember who eventually got out of their contract and then was later sued for
sounding like themselves. Only thing that really pops up is John Fogerty of CCR
went under this lawsuit, but i felt like i was told it was someone else, but that may be
the story! Upon my research, I did come across another lawsuit that is particularly
close to home, only because i am named after him...Neil Young was sued for NOT
sounding like himself, what the!

Professor,
Your explanation of how this tiny album is made inspired me and not the music. How
was society inspired by this group without knowing their background?

Moshing (aka slamdancing) + hardcore punk
This originated in Orange County in the late 1970s. As I can attest, it spread to L.A.
and then Washington D.C. Punk splintered as the artsier fringe began post-punk,
Goth, and new wave. Hardcore emerged. The "gender fluid," misfit, LGBT-friendly
spirit of the early scene ended. Machismo entered. Mosh is D.C. slang for "mash." At
the front of a concert floor, a circle pit forms around those who shove each other. As
