Week 6 Discussion: Epic Changes in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East
Hello everyone!
For week 6, I decided to discuss on option 2 African Nation-State Development.
Africa struggled to gain its own independence that was supported by the European
government who wanted Africa to have its own form of government. To give political
guidance to parts of Africa, the British colonies initiated reforms that eventually lead to
the elections in Africa.
However, South Africa was still owned by some parts of Europe. In this, the politics were
controlled by the Europeans and thus resulted in only Caucasians being able to vote.
After colonizing parts of Africa, France also tried to introduce the people of Africa French
culture but unfortunately, ethnocentricism and racism surfaced against Africans thus
leading the influence to be halted.
Africa rose to nationalism through organizations that focused on African independence.
These groups rose after WWII and protested against European rule. After four years
Africa was granted independence from French president Charles De Gaulle in 1958.
The reasons for Africa taking so long to gain their independence is due to the late
colonialism in Africa compared to other parts of Asia. Africa also had a deepened sense
of community and when Europeans practiced rule and divide it caused the people of
Africa to rebel which made it difficult to gain colonial rule over it.
