Unit 28 - Assignment 1

Investigate the role of Branding
In A Selected Business

In this task I have been asked how a selected
business brand itself. The brand I have chosen
is JD Sports , which was founded in 1981 by
David Makin and John Wardle , they are known
for retailing high end brands for its customers
and making sure that they are number one for
supplying products for its customer needs.

JD Sports product is for them to supply high end brands for its
customers in its latest fashion. They have been doing this since
1981 but back then the majority of it was sports clothing and
equipment. However , upto the recent years JD Sports have been
selling clothes that relate to the trends and JD Sports being a UK
retailer people here mainly wear tracksuits for the men. This
follows upto JD Sports mainly they target the market to be men
but they do sell clothes and accessories for females but mainly
online as they have got less variety for the women in store.
Furthermore , this relates to their brand and brand portfolio
because when you think of the name of JD Sports you would
instantly think of sports clothes and equipment from brands such
as; Nike , Adidas , Puma , The North Face and Under Armour. This
all sums up to JD Sports applying their service to their customers
as me being a customer I believe JD Sports is number one for me
rather than going to anywhere else.

This also links to their target audience as JD Sports try to aim at
both genders but from my experience shopping at JD Sports , I
tend to see the men shopping there including young teenagers. I
think this because men tend to wear clothes like tracksuits and
trainers whereas girls tend to wear dresses and jeans. However ,
JD Sports do try their best to sell clothes for the females as they
get celebrity endorsements such as Maya Jama and Rita Ora to
role model for their company. Also JD Sports have got their own
brand which is called Pink Soda and that brand is only for girls.
Overall , I believe JD Sports tend to aim their market at both

genders but males get more interested as JD Sports get more
male figures to influence the company.

JD Sports use their brand very well and
I think not very many people are aware
of it but JD Sports do own Tessuti which
is one of their brands that supply
designer brands for its customers. So
this store is for the people who like their designer brands such as;
Armani Exchange , D-Squared , Kenzo , Moschino and many more.
I believe people tend to buy designer clothes because they follow
this trend where it shows you look rich or have money to spend
but in JD Sports perspective this is very good for them as it allows
them to generate more income for the business itself and allows
the business to expand.

Every business would have to layout the marketing mix including
their aims and objectives , if the business didn't have any of
these the business wouldn't work at all. For JD Sports they do
follow the marketing mix as this got the business recognised such
as having stores in every city in the UK and promoting
themselves everywhere. However, prices will vary depending on
what the business says as they bring products in to its latest. This
also follows up to them being everywhere in the UK but they have
gone overseas as JD have got over 2,240 stores including that
they have got stores in countries like Australia , Thailand ,
Singapore and the USA. This works really well for them as people
over the world will be interested in the UK fashion and JD’s having
stores in shopping malls is a huge bonus for them because
instead of having one local store , people tend to go to one
shopping mall and get all their shopping done there.
Furthermore , there's not many big shopping centres in all cities
and customers will travel that distance to get shopping done so
having JD Sports being one of the big retailers in England as it
helps them as a business.
