A1 - Preparing sport and exercise field and laboratory-based testing.
Learning Aim A: Examine the preparation required prior to sport and exercise field and
laboratory-based testing.

Prior to completing a Multistage Fitness Test, a health and safety evaluation as well as ethical
discussions must be performed. Participants are required to complete an indoor and outdoor test,
assessing their VO2 max, discussed below:
Health and Safety

There are many stages to consider when discussing health and safety in fitness testing processes.
Firstly, risk assessments of the test, equipment and environment must be done. These include listing
anything that could be considered a hazard (cause harm to the participant or others). The risk is then
scaled as to whether it is high or low probability of causing harm / damage. Subsequently, you are
then required to put in safety measures to control the hazards as best possible. Pre-exercise testing
carries the risk of injury and the possible exacerbation of existing conditions brought on by
performance, allowing the client to be informed of these risks prior to participation. Below is an
example of risk assessments for the “VO2 Max Test” as a laboratory test in (Table 1) as well as
“Multi-stage Fitness Test” for a field example. A.P1

Equipment must be checked and prepared prior to the test, forms used for recording the results must
be pre-prepared to ensure they have the correct content and are ready in time for the test. The
equipment to be used must be at hand and functional. If there is a problem with the equipment, it may
need to be calibrated or replaced to obtain accurate results and ensure the participant’s safety. Once
the equipment is assessed and considered safe and operative, it must be adjusted to suit the subject
(e.g. adjusting the height of the seat on a bike). This is to guarantee that the subject is comfortable
while participating, as well as the accuracy of their results. As well as the equipment being used
during the test, there must be suitable first-aid equipment and emergency procedures put in place prior
to the testing. These must be discussed with the participant(s) and those recording results, etc
(Pre-Test Procedures, Dec 2018).A.P1 A.M1

Before the participant can engage with any of the processes to follow, they must sign an informed
consent form. There are four components of informed consent: decision capacity, documentation of
consent, disclosure, and competency (Informed Consent and Important, Nov 2020). Decision capacity
