D2 - Assess the importance of measuring and managing employee
performance at work.
Performance management at Tesco is the management process which
contributes to the effective management of their employees as individuals
as well as teams to reach a high level performance as an organisation
which is important because having effective input from employees will
bring success to the organisation which can then raise sales and maximise
profits as well as getting a good reputation and company awareness.
Performance management provides the means for Tesco’s employees to
improve their skills and abilities and also learn how to apply them to their
work more constructively which is important because if they improve their
skills whether they go to training or learn new skills in the working
environment through their peers for example, then they will get work
done more effectively and efficiently at Tesco therefore bringing further
success as well as satisfaction to their customers and keeping them
happy.
Tesco use appraisals as a motivational tool to measure their employees’
performance at a regular basis. It is used as an opportunity to review an
employee’s record of achievement over a specified period of time showing
exactly what they have accomplished and whether they have gained or
lost motivation to work or increased or decreased their performance
levels. Appraisals are followed by setting objectives for the next period
which gives the employee direction and something to work to. This is
important because if the employees have something to work to every
period then that will motivate them to achieve their targets in order to
receive further appraisal and managers can also measure their
performance to see how they are doing and whether they are achieving
their targets or not.
This process determines the measurement of employees’ performance
and helps in the development of the employees’ skills and abilities. The
main objective in the measurement process is to improve the performance
of individuals to ultimately improve the efficiency and productivity of
Tesco as an organisation. The process provides the opportunity into
looking at what the organisation has achieved and what it can achieve.
For example, the appraisal and the motivational tools help to set
objectives for the next period in hopes of achieving a higher sales target.
