Edna began to feel like one who awakens from a
vast, horrifying, impossible yet truthful dream, to
feel her lungs aching for air, gasping and struggling.
The overwhelming exhaustion overtaking her,
hearing the cries of people as they ran to grab her
helpless body and drag it away from the temptation
of the beckoning waves.
Darkness, that’s all Edna was greeted with,
that’s all that she could feel, the deep burning
desire to accept the approaching light, yet she could
not. The memories of her children flooded her vision
as she awoke, feeling soft comforting warmth
wrapped tightly around her body.
She slept but a few hours. They were troubled
and intruding hours, disturbed with dreams that
were full of love and longing for not only the
children that were hers but for the unattainable love
that she craved. The air was invigorating and
steadied her senses as she took deep refreshing
breaths, no longer feeling her lungs ache or her
body give up.
Edna arose, cramped from her attempted
escape, clutching feebly as she stumbled to the
door eager to leave.
Edna expected most people at this early hour to
be in bed asleep, yet as she stumbled to the
kitchen, she was met with a room full of anxious
faces. She felt as if she had committed a crime as
all the disapproving eyes landed on her. Before
anyone could vocally disapprove of Edna and her
actions, she held up her hand dismissively.
Despite being in a room full of those that love
her, she felt alone, absolutely alone. None of them
would understand why, not even Robert would
