Romanian Orphan Studies
Privation: no attachment bond has ever been formed.

Institutionalisation: usually an example of privation. this refers to the behaviours that result from
being in an institution (in attachment, an orphanage).

Romanian Orphanages:

- from 1965 – 1989 romania was living under a dictatorship whereby contraception was
banned and families were encouraged to give their children over to orphanages (in the hope
of creating a citizens army).
- the orphanages were understaffed and the children were severely neglected.
- when the orphanages were made public knowledge psychologists became interested in the
effects of this institutionalisation on the children.

Research:

morison et al (1984)

- how they collected their data: children who had been in the orphanage for 4 (max) or 8
(min) months were adopted to families in canada. they were compared to a control group of
canadian children (non-adopted).
- did they find any negative effects of institutionalisation?: romanians had lower IQs (8
month group had lowest).
- did they find that it is possible to recover from institutionalisation?: yes, as there was a
positive correlation between the IQ scores and the quality of the home life.

rutter and songua-barke

- how they collected their data: longitudinal study on orphans adopted to UK families. 165
orphans compared to 52 british (adopted) children.
- did they find any negative effects of institutionalisation?: romanians had poorer cognitive,
social and physical development. those adopted after 6 months struggled with friendships.
- did they find that it is possible to recover from institutionalisation?: yes, by the age of 4
those adopted before 6 months of age were likely to have ‘caught up’.

zeanah et al (2003)

- how they collected their data: 136 children. half placed in high quality foster care, and half
remained in orphanage. tested at 30, 42 and 54 months and 8 years.
- did they find any negative effects of institutionalisation?: the children who remained in the
orphanage had lower IQ and were more likely to suffer from psychiatric problems.
- did they find that it is possible to recover from institutionalisation?: yes, because the
fostered group had higher IQs, less psychiatric problems and better attachments.
