Kershaw ‘Hitler 1936-1945 nemesis’ p. (the penguin
group)
Pg 131= Aryanistation drive led to the pogrom of 1938. Terror on
streets of Vienna caused emigration of their Jews and others thought
they could follow suit.
17-August men had to be named Israel and women had to be named
Sara

Pg 132= First synagogue destroyed 9th June- Nazis growing confidence
Hitler did not want to associate himself with anti-Jewish policy and
didn’t discuss Jewish question in order to maintain his foreign relations
“Had little or nothing to do with escalating the campaign against Jews”
others took the initiative on the assumption it was what Hitler wanted
(working towards the Fuhrer).

Pg 133= All of Nazi society took Nazi anti-Jewish policy on board.
Hitler’s role was crucial of not direct- His broad sanction was needed
but little more was required

Pg 134= April 1938- Plan was to push Jews out of Berlin and to proceed
more radically to push them all out. Madagascar seen as most suitable.
Madagascar plan seriously considered during 1940 – territorial
resettlement favoured over forced emigration which was a failed policy.

Pg 135= “The notion of Jewish resettlement, already aired in the SD,
was itself latently genocidal”.
“The ‘final goal’ remained indistinct, as such compatible with all
attempts to further the removal of Jews.”
Towards the end of July 1938 Hitler inferred to Goebbels that ‘the Jews
must be removed from Germany in 10 years’
