M2 and D2 Unit 1 – Travel and tourism

M2 - How developments, trends and factors are currently having a significant (big) effect
on the travel and tourism sector.
Developments –
Self check-in-
Self check-ins are something that have been recently introduced to parts of the travel and
tourism sector which have allowed for quicker progress to be made when it comes to
checking in for tourists. They are something that allow for tourists to independently sign
themselves into their place of tourism without having to interact with a member of staff at
the site or even at home online before they arrive at the tourism site. Having this ability
available to tourists has had a big impact on the travel and tourism industry. It has helped to
reduce the amount of staff that is needed for check-ins to be done. As it is now an option
that tourists have, they can then check-in online or at the site at a self check-in area. This
allowed for the process of checking in an increased amount of people at a time without
having to use more staff. According to an article written by ‘Protel’ it was seen that around
78% of tourists wanted to have self check-in areas online or at the site as they stated that it
would be better than waiting in line.

One of the more significant effects that self check-ins have had on the sector is that it has
increased the rates in which people are checked in as the lines would have decreased
because of the increase of online self check-ins and self check-in areas at the site itself.
Because of this, it has been seen as a time saving method by many businesses such as British
Airways which have introduced it in order to increase the speed of checking in. It can be
seen that self check-ins have had a big impact on the tourism sector as it has been adopted
by many businesses such as Premier Inn which have had good customer feedback because
of this as they are wanting to increase the speed of check-ins and to decrease queues and
the use of staff at check-ins. It has had a big impact and has seen an increase in popularity as
it had allowed for customer comfort and satisfaction.

The Internet-
The internet is something that has seen an increase in usage by tourists when it comes to
booking their holidays as it is a quicker process than having to see a travel agent. Using the
internet is something that has increased in popularity as around 59.9% of the world has
access to it allowing for them to more easily research their holidays without having to read
about it in a book or talking to a travel agent. Tourists like that they can have a more
accessible and easier way to book their holidays without having to visit a travel agent, it is
evident that it has had a big impact on the tourism industry as around 81% of bookings are
made online. It also had helped to contribute to the amount of money made by the tourism
industry. The tourism industry brings in $1.2 trillion a year from the whole of the tourism
industry, around 63% of that is made from bookings online or $756 billion. This shows that
the internet plays a big part in having an effect on the tourism industry.

Having the internet has allowed for bookings and holiday research to be more accessible
and easier for tourists. Making it easier to book holidays meant that tourists where more
likely to book holidays as it was more accessible and there is a wider variety of information
on certain holidays that can be found without many issues. Having the internet has helped
to have a big impact on the travel and tourism industry and has helped to increase holidays
by making them more accessible for tourists as they would be more widely available.

Trends-
Independent travel –
Independent travel is a trend that has been seeing a great increase since 2015 as more
people have started to seek interest in organising their own holiday. This is a trend that has
had a great effect on how the tourism industry operates and what choices are made by
those individual tourism businesses. It has been evident that independent travel is a trend
that will have a good effect on the tourism industry. The reason being, tourists will become
more confident in going on holiday which will mean that they are more likely to go on
holiday more often thus benefiting the tourism industry. As it had seen a 150% increase in
popularity, this will mean that many parts of the tourism industry will benefit from the
increase number of tourists which will be going on more holidays.

In 2020 independent travel agencies had seen an increase in sales by 41%, this showed that
the impact that independent travel was increasing. As more people where wanting to plan
their own holidays or with an independent travel agent, this is starting to have a larger
impact on the tourism industry as more destinations would be getting visited which would
allow for their tourism industry to make more money. An example of a destination that will
get more visits is India as independent travel had allowed for them to gain more visits as
they now get 10.93million visitors a year. This is something that will have a big impact on
their tourism industry and will allow for them to bring in more money because if
independent travellers. Tourism businesses in India have now been able to grow because of
the increase in tourism thanks to independent travel. This is an example of how
independent travel has had a big impact on the tourism industry and has allowed for more
income.

Factors-
Health warnings, epidemics and pandemics -
This is a factor that can have a big impact on the tourism industry as it can cause tourist to
feel unsafe and in danger meaning that they are less likely to want to go on holiday as they
would see it as a threat to their health. This most recently has been a big threat to the
tourism industry as there has been a pandemic which is covid-19 which had had a huge
impact on the tourism industry world wide. It effected all the aspects of the tourism
industry and caused it to loose £245 billion which was a loss from only 5 months. Having
covid-19 present has caused many issues for big businesses and has had a significant effect
on how they operate and the number of customers they got. This loss of money in the
tourism industry has also put at risk around 150 million jobs in the tourism industry which
would cause many tourism businesses to have the issue of not having enough employees to
keep them operating.

Part of the travel industry which mostly being effected is travel agencies as there are less
people wanting to go on holiday because of restrictions and the feeling of not being safe. It
has been said by ‘IndpendentNews’ that up to 8% of travel agencies could go out of business
because of the effects left by covid-19. Covid-19 had caused a decrease in visitors by 76%
which created a big impact for tourism businesses in terms of cancellations and losses as
they had to give refunds. ‘Fleetway’ was one of the travel agency’s that went out of business
because of covid-19 even though it had around 45 years of experience and had been hugely
favoured by the UK. The impact of covid-19 has been something that has caused the tourism
