Introduction:

, In this assignment I will explain how different networks communicate, I will identify communication
protocols and models, I will also explain why communication protocols are important and I will
finally compare the OSI seven-layer model and the TCP/IP model. I am an apprentice with a small
business corporation in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire which offers a networking and
correspondence facility. The firm was invited to a stall at a small business trade show and a detailed
brochure with a poster and a leaflet was ordered for me. All produced products should be ideal for
small business owners with a very limited knowledge of communications technologies.

P1: Explain how networks communicate
Types of networks:
As I’m an apprentice for a small businesses I would recon=mend my superiors to invest in either LAN
network or a wireless network as both of these will be efficient for my small business. As we are a
small business we do not have a wide area to work with so the use of a WAN network and a MAN
network will be pointless an inefficient as we will not need all the range that the network can cover
as well as we do not have many devices that need to communicate with each other. So as an
apprentice I will advise my superiors to invest in a LAN or wireless network as they seem to be the
most efficient for my small business.

LAN: LAN stands for local area network the purpose of a LAN network is for the computer network
to link the computers in a small area together so they can communicate with one another. Examples
of were a LAN network will be used is a home, classroom, laboratory, university campus or office
building. This network is used in everyday life as we use it our homes to get an internet connection.
LAN is important as it makes everyday life a lot easier for example it is used in schools to provide an
internet connection so students can do research. Without it the students would have to read
through books in order to do research. This will be sufficient for a small business as they will need to
communicate with users from there local area.

This is a small diagram that simply explain how
LAN works. It shows multiple devices connecting
to the server. The process that is completed
when the devices are connected to the server is
called LAN.

WAN: A wide area network is a broadband network that stretches over a broad geographical area
for the primary purpose of computer networking. WANs are used to link LANs and other network
