FOR SECOND YEAR STUDENTS IN BIOCHEMISTRY AND BIOTECHNOLOGY

1. How does ligand binding to a G protein-coupled receptor change the levels of
cyclic AMP in the cell? How can cAMP mediate fast and transient responses, as
well as slow and sustained responses?
2. Explain why the small GTPase Ras is a proto-oncogene.
3. Discuss the evidence that many cases of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s
disease are caused by prion-like mechanisms.
4. Discuss theories of how memories form in the hippocampus.
5. What are embryonic stem cells? (30%) What are induced pluripotent stem cells?
(30%) Discuss the reasons why it might be important to continue to investigate
the biology of embryonic stem cells. (40%)
6. What is a stem cell niche? (30%) With reference to skeletal muscle and/or the
gut, discuss the roles that the niche can play in regulating stem cell behaviour.

7. Describe the process of lymphocyte activation by antigen in lymph nodes.
8. How do the products of the MHC influence the ability of an individual to initiate an
immune response?
