About the laboratory at The Berkshire College of Agriculture

The Laboratories at the Berkshire College of Agriculture are teaching Labs where
pupils learn and obtain further education qualifications. The science department is
based in a building inside the college and works closely with other college
departments, such as people taking animal management qualifications. The science
department at the college follows and uses health and safety legislation which
include COSHH and the health and safety work act And using CLEAPSS while
writing risk assessments.

About the GSK Laboratory.
GSK is a laboratory-based company in the UK that develops drugs for medical use,
which also develops pharmaceuticals and has research labs that develop and
investigate microbiology as well as researching and developing other medical
products such as vaccines, sensodyne toothpaste, aquafresh, painkiller such as
advil just to name a few.

Health and safety work act
The health and safety work act is a law that covers all companies in areas and
aspects of the workplace for employees’ health and safety. Health and safety work
is often updated. Companies must have the most up-to-date current standards.
These laws and regulations must be obeyed within the workplace for the health and
safety of staff and employees, and the purpose of the health and safety act is to

,prevent death, injury and ill-health in the workplace. If these rules and regulations do
not follow their companies or individuals overseeing the health and safety work, a
company may face fines and imprisonment. The health and safety act covers the
safe use of chemicals and biological stomach substances for technicians and
laboratory workers and handling heavy objects in the workplace. Are the stations
protected by the health and safety work act hazards computer and laptop screens
and legislations to do with display screen equipment must be followed where these
are used in the workplace.

COSHH
The COSHH legislation covers hazardous substances’ uses; part of this legislation
includes that all hazardous materials must be labelled correctly. When transporting
chemicals in tankers, these also should be labelled correctly in the case of an
accident or spillage. When transferred into lab storage, laboratory technicians
correctly label chemicals as part of the legislation.

CLEAPSS
CLEAPSS is used in Educational settings when devising and producing a risk
assessment; these CLEAPSS hazcards list all risks for chemicals and biological
substances, store the chemicals, and dispose of them. These hazcards also provide
crucial information to help staff members and technical staff prepare Solutions for
concentrated chemicals.

The potential hazard at the Berkshire college of agriculture.

Signs and Labels
In the laboratory areas of the college, signs and labels are used on doors and
chemicals. The college laboratories’ doors are labelled With hazards of the area and
health and safety measures that need to be taken. For example, the first set of
drawers marks where the lavatory begins, and a sign shows this; there are also
signs for no eating and which biosafety area people are entering. These signs then
continue under the second set of drawers, stating which PPE is required, which
substances are allowed to enter these Labs and which biosafety level the Labs can
operate. There is also a fire exit at the end of The Laboratory building, which states
that you are entering a biohazard area. All chemicals and biological substances also
labelled, and chemicals are accompanied by a hazard card which CLEAPSS
provides. These signs and labels are required and help their compliance with health
and safety legislation And apply to their health and safety management of The
Laboratory areas. The signs on the doors comply with COSHH and the health and
safety work act as these alert people to hazardous chemicals as well as complying
with the health and safety act by reminding people it is dangerous to bring other
substances such as food into these areas as they run the risk of contamination.

, Other signs, such as you are now entering a laboratory area, comply with Koch.
Therefore, it suggests that no hazardous substances should be taken in or out of that
area, including lab coats and other PPE.

Storage
The storage areas in the Laboratories consist of fridges and freezers as well as
chemical storage areas. The door to the lab storage areas are labelled With
biohazard signs and is only allowed for specific personnel. All chemicals are
provided with hazards as well as a set storage plan which CLEAPSS gives. Certain
chemicals may be kept separately for chemicals, and there are different storage
areas for more hazardous chemicals. The fridges and freezers store samples and
animal products in the second biohazard area. All stored chemicals and animal
by-products are held at level 2, and 1 animal by-products are stored in the freezers.
The storage area also contains clean fridges which have no animal by-products.
These storage areas comply with COSHH regulation, protecting people from
hazardous substances and chemicals and animal by-products. The labelling and
storing chemicals with hazcards also comply with COSHH. This storage system
allows the department to comply why with health and safety regulations as well as
effectively storing essential pieces of equipment following legislations And because
only certain personnel being allowed to enter the storage areas, students are kept
away from hazardous substances comply with COSHH And allowing the correct
personnel to wear the correct PPE which is chosen through a risk assessment.
