Othello character analysisOthello is a dark skin character, and he is the general of the Venetian army, a
Christian Moor and his wife’s name is Desdemona. He is from Africa, this
explains his difference in race and culture. This is the reason why many people
don’t like his current status. On the one hand, he is an experienced soldier who
won the post of general by intelligence and excellence in the military. He is
courageous, intelligent, and respected by his troops. However, on the other hand,
he is a black “Moor”. Racism which has ro do with Othello’s race in this play is
quite occuring. His appearance is described with the quotes “thick lips” , “an old
black ram” and “A barbary horse”. Othello feels as an outsider and knows he is
an outsider. Sometimes he presents himself as an outsider as he feels insecure
about being different from the other Venetians. During the whole play, Othello is
always referred to as a “Moor”. This is because he is the only black person
amongst all those white people. When referred to ‘black’ by other characters,
they were not only referring to the color of his skin, but also to some type of
symbolization. In the play, white is a symbol of innocence and honor, while on the
other hand ‘black’ was a symbol of guilt and wickedness. Othello grew up in
danger and slavery, so he is quite experienced in the battlefield. Desdemona is
the only person that brought love to Othello’s life. So when it comes to love, he is
quite inexperienced and therefore is manipulated easily by Iago when he tries to
brainwash him against his wife and about stuff to do with their marriage. Othello
is a military man, active in his actions. So later in the play we will see more of
this. Throughout the play, the author uses animal imagery to describe characters,
specifically, Othello. It was used to highlight the evil in the characters. In the
beginning, Othello was a nobleman. Yet, he was constantly compared to animals
throughout the play due to his race.
