Common treatment methods
The common treatments methods are as follows;
SALTAPS
PRICED
Stability treatment
Common cold treatment
Medical referral
SALTAPS (injury assessment)
See- stop and assess the injury
Ask- pose questions about the injury
Look- check for a specific sign e.g., swelling
Touch- palpate to identify tenderness and heat
Active-ask athlete to perform active movements of the body to check pain and ROM (range of movements)
Passive- gently move the body part and check how it feels, and the range of motion
Strength- provide light resistance to the body part. Test whether they can walk, run, jump, sprint etc.
It is appropriate and advisable for professionals to give treatment to all individuals with sports-related injuries. The
aim of the SALTAPS process is to make an accurate assessment of the type, severity, and location of an injury. This
can be hard for some sports injuries as even professional can find it difficult to find immediate and effective
treatments or diagnosis.
PRICED (injury treatment)
PRICED is an acronym meant for the prompt treatment stages of an injury. This allows the healing process to be
enhanced. The guidelines are there to manage the inflammatory response, not to remove to completely.
Protect- protect person and injured part of the body to minimise the risk of further injury
Rest- rest allows healing and prevents further damage
Ice- ice reduces swelling
Compression- compression acts as support and reduces the amount of swelling
Elevate- elevation reduces blood flow and swelling to the area, with the help of gravity
Diagnosis- diagnosis needs to be done by a professional e.g., scan
For example, a shoulder injury may initially require the use of a sling, and a knee ligament injury may require a brace
during the initial healing phases.
, There are a range of other treatments that can help manage the symptoms in the preliminary stages of injury. These
treatments can be categorised into cryotherapy (cold treatments), thermotherapy (heat treatments), stability
treatments and electrotherapy (electric-based treatments). Examples of these include the following:
Cryotherapy- use of bagged ice, ice packs, ice sprays, frozen peas, ice bandages, cryo-compression
equipment.
Thermotherapy- heat packs, radiant heat lamps, heat creams/gels, heat pads, paraffin wax, spa baths, hot
water bottle, massage, thermal blanket, baths, hot stones, Sunna.
Stability treatments- athletic tape, kinesio tape, bracing, joint support, slings, crutches, splints.
Electrotherapy- ultrasound, shockwaves, transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS)
Cryotherapy (cold therapy)
Cold compress- there are so that the blood vessels vasoconstrict, causing a reduction in the flow of blood to
the injured area.
This is to reduce swelling and the pain felt by stopping the nerve endings from conducting impulses
It is best used directly after an injury but also for 48-72 hours afterwards.
Task 1: research the diverse types of injuries this could be used for
Injuries that can be treated with cryotherapy are;
Acute or chronic pain
Acute inflammation or injury
Postsurgical pain and swelling
These types of injuries include sprains, stains, subluxations, dislocations, contusions, and fractures.
Doctors: this is a type of treatment that take away damaged or diseased tissue that comes from a variety of medical
conditions. Cryotherapy is usually done without open surgery. Most people recover quickly from the procedure and
with minimal pain. Cryotherapy is used for;
Bone cancer
Cervical cancer, liver cancer or prostate cancer
Precancerous cells in the cervix (lower end of the uterus)
Precancerous skin conditions and early-stage skin cancers, including squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell
carcinoma
Retinoblastoma (cancer to the retina in children)
Skin conditions like warts, skin tags or dark spots
