What were the main terms of the Treaty of Versailles?

Military clauses:
● Army reduced to 100,000 men-French concern they didn’t
want to be invaded for the third time
● Conscription was banned

● Navy limited to 36 ships in total, with only 6 battleships of
limited tonnage-British concern because they needed to be
safe by sea and have the largest navy.
● No air force-Britain aswell because they didn’t want them to
invade. Airforce was increasing in power didn’t want
Germany to stay as a large power. America president was a
peaceful idealist,
● No submarines-British problem-they wanted to control the
seas.
● No armoured vehicles- France would struggle to defend
against tanks so they don’t want it
● Rhineland was to be demilitarised- France problem due to it
being close to Germany, almost neutral grounds.

Territorial Clauses
● Memel went to Lithuania

● West Prussia and Posen went to Poland to form the Polish
corridor
● Upper Silesia went to Poland (after a plebiscite)- plebiscite
was a referendum
● Alsace Lorraine was returned to France

● Eupen and Malmedy went to Belgium

● Northern Schleswig went to Denmark (after a plebiscite)

● Loss of all colonies

● Anschluss was forbidden

● Danzig to become a ‘free city’ administered by the League of
Nations.
