Why did Italy invade Abyssinia
- The past
 In 1896 It troops had tried to invade Abyssinia in the Battle of Adowa and failed
 Mussolini wan6ted revenge for the embarrassment caused
 He wanted the resources Abyssinia had, along with glory and conquest
 In December 1934 there was a dispute between Italy and Abyssinia soldiers at the
Wai – Wal oasis
 Mussolini took this as his cue to invade and claimed it was in Italian territory
 Emperor Haile Selassie appealed to the League for help
- The future
 Eco - Abyssinia had fertile lands and mineral wealth.
 This was useful to a rapidly industrialising society like It and one that was trying to
recover from the Great Depression – wanted raw materials
 Militarism – Its society under Mussolini was militaristic and had been under the
Roman Empire, Mussolini wanted to remind people of this
 Therefore, he needed military victories that proved it.
What happened
- Phase 1
 December 1934 – Wal Wal
o dispute between It soldiers and Aby at Wal Wal (just inside Aby territory but
near It Somaliland)
o Mussolini demand apology and prepared to invade
o Aby Emperor Haile Selassie went to the League of Nations for help.
