Who were the ‘Big Three at the Versailles Peace
Conference?
By the end of the lesson, you will:

1. Recall the work you did on the aftermath of World War 1
2. Understand what the nature of the Peace Settlement of Versailles.
3. Understand who was present at the conference, which country they represented,
their aims, and approach towards Germany.


What was the Peace Settlement of Versailles?
 11th Nov 1918 – guns on western front fell silent and an armistice declared
 2 months later the leader of the victorious powers (US, Br, Fr and It) met in Paris to discuss
what was to be done with Gr, Au, Hu, Trk and Big.
 5 separate suburbs of Paris used for different countries
 Palace of Versailles – Gr
 St. Germain – Au
 Sevres – Trk
 Neuilly – Big
 Trianon – Hu
 All the Treaties were controversial – much of which was due to
the firmly held views of the central leaders and their countries
 The palace of Versailles was deliberately chosen by Fr
 Fr and Gr had been at war with each other in the Franco – Prussian War of 1870
 France had lost and r declared their new German Empire from Versailles just to
annoy Fr. So, Fr did the same to Gr in 1919

 To take revenge on Gr
 1914 invasion
 2/3 of the soldier’s casualties, Fr 1.4 mil died, lost
17% of their men.

 To make it impossible for Gr to invade again
 Memory of Fr – Pr in 1870
 Reduce Gr strength particularly mil
