UNIT 4 LEARNING AIM A RESUBMISSION.

In this assignment we are looking for the importance of health, safety, and responsibilities, and how we
can apply for it. Then I am talking about COOSH and RIDDOR. Also, we are looking for a company called
Unilever and Gateway Science Department, I am talking about their health and safety and the use of
control hazardous substances and what equipment I to avoid the hazards and I am going to compare the
similarities and differences between the two companies.

P1 part.

Chemical substances are analyzed by titration in laboratories and in industries laboratories. The risk
assessment for these methods will be the same in each laboratory but there are some differences. The
differences are the types and concentration of the chemicals in each laboratory. Concentrated solution
or bacteria diseases are dangerous so it is likely to be used in industry and the risk assessment will have
more information, where the experiment is carried out or special precautions.

 Application of health legislation in scientific organization.

CLEAPSS stand for Consrtium of Local Education Authorities for the Provision of Science Services. This
gives advice on health and safety. For example, PPE equipment, COSHH, RIDDOR and COMAH, also helps
management services to guide them.

PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) equipment is a way that workers protect themselves with these
items. Workers need to wear PPE equipment to reduce risks in labs and industries. The good point of
PPE equipment is when worker wear these it avoids hazard from the workplace, if any hazard is caused
the manager should remove it from that place to stop increasing the numbers of hazards, then the
manager should replace it with one safer than the other one to be more effective. Another reason PPE
equipment is important is to find a safe place for work where it can reduce the number of hazards and
ensure that the workers complete the PPE necessary without getting injured.

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) is legislation that controls harmful substances and
helps you to understand what you need to do with COSHH. This is a workplace using large and small
amounts of chemicals. Every business should have a safety data sheet and COSHH risk assessment to
give you details about the chemical you are using and how you can avoid hazard using PPE equipment.
One example of chemicals is cleaning products. This can easily be hazardous because of inhalation. The
purpose of COSHH is to show you how harmful the chemical is and how you can prevent it. Substance
that damages our breathing, skin, swallowing or eyes affects your human health depending on which
chemical it is. When you inhale harmful substances, it can affect your respiratory system or can harm
other parts of your body.

To avoid this, you should know the data sheet of the chemical inhaled and wear PPE equipment like
wear a mask and wear gloves and goggles. The skin gets contaminated when the chemical splashes,
direct contact with the chemical or touching any contaminated place. After doing any experiment or be
in contact with any chemical you should your hands before leaving the lab, the important point of that is
because you can swallow the chemical and get ingested inside your body causing harm, therefore you
should wash your hands before leaving any lab. Chemical substances can also be gas or vapor, to avoid
splashing and damage your eyes you should wear goggles.

, The purpose of health and safety is to protect all the people who are involved in business. The manager
of the business has an obligation and responsibility of health and safety and when the worker is injured
by a hazard. A risk assessment is made before any activity is carried out. This is about step by step to
avoid any injury. This allows workers to be exposed. COSSH assesses the risk to their employees and
avoids any risk.

The management of health and safety at work is to manage health and safety and apply it in the
workplace. Employee duty needs to report any health and safety injury or dangerous situation. Use the
equipment in accordance and take responsibility for health and safety. One of the managements is to
take a risk assessment to know the potential hazards and how they could be affected at the workplace.
There will be a small group with a range of 5 or mor people to manage this. Under the age of 18, the risk
is assessed separately. After taking the risk assessment it should take a serious manage for hazardous
equipment or substances. There is a person in charge of supervising and assisting health and safety and
complying with legislation.

Manual handling operation is when a person is transporting something by hand or bodily force.
Employers need to carry out a risk assessment about handling manually because it may affect employers
and employees. Employees, their duty is to take care of her/himself about health and safety. The load
that is handled could be an object, person or animal by pushing it, lifting, putting it down, pulling or
carrying. Health and safety here need people's help to handle things because it may fall you in your feet
or body. Also, there could be a wet floor and you may fall while handling. The information of manual
handling gives you how to handle to help you.

RIDDOR stands for Reporting of Injuries, Disease and Dangerous Occurrence Regulations is the
legislation to report any injury that happened at the workplace. This report any injury related with
death, serious injuries or it could be industrial disease and dangerous. Report is a legal way to inform
about any type of injuries and they identify where and how risks arise, they also investigate what has
happened and which is the problem. RIDDOR reports an injury that is work-related, this means that if
someone suicides then it must not be reported because it is not work related.

An example of a report.

Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) prevent major accidents with harmful substances. Some
harmful substances that are covered in this legislation are nicotine, tar oil or zinc. If an organization use
danger substances, it could have COMAH to take all the measures necessary to avoid accidents.
